I just rebuilt an 066 from a few parts saws. Put in a new piston, spark plug, fuel filter. It has great spark and compression. When i try to start it i just get the odd backfire. Just can't get it to turn over! I changed the ignition and the carb but get the same result. I've rebuilt several of these and never had this problem. Any ideas?????? ???

Did the saw pass pressure/vac test? What brand spark plug? (Have seen a lot of NGKs bad out of the box lately). Will it fire if you squirt a little fuel in the carburetor? If it will, then there is some sort of fuel delivery issue, perhaps a collapsed or pinched fuel line.

Had a similar issue on a 362. Loose electrode on New plug, Denso

Look and see if the flywheel key is sheared or not.
-
When trying to start it pull the plug to see if it is wet or dry. If dry put some fuel mix into the carb. If wet it is flooded. Are you getting any kick back on the starter when pulling it. Just thinking of a possible timing issue.
-
it's getting fuel because it does backfire with flames out of the muffler, almost feels like a timing issue because it backfires every 2 or 3 pulls. Haven't done a pressure/vac test. And i have tries 2 different plugs.

I think your correct the timing sounds off.
Did you put a different coil on it ? Also like Fish mentioned earlier, Check the flywheel key.
-
Which coil an flywheel did you use?
-
as suggested already, change to different coil. they had numerous coils for the 064/066/660. some have diferent timing than others and the flywheel must match the coil,or itll rip the rope out of your hand and backfire etc.....
-
I've tried a 2 bolt coil and a 3 bolt coil with the same results. I'm using the metal flywheel. I'll try another coil tomorrow if i have a different one.
-
The metal flywheels that I have seen are a 2 slot flywheel, do you have it in the right slot. Believe it should be in the x marked slot. I would check your flywheel key. And also check your coil gap. Have seen saw where the flywheel was not properly installed and it spin past the key and make the saw act crazy.

This is a 1 slot metal flywheel , part # 1122 400 1209. I've tried 3 different coils with no luck. does anyone know the correct coil part # to match this flywheel ?
-
According to my records that flywheel is from a early 064 with heated handles
Should be running 1122 400 1311 coil, or 000 400 1300 or 1122 400 1303
-
I don't see the 1122 400 1209 on that pdf file.
-
I'm sorry I had transposed the number to 1122 400 1207
The 122 400 209 flywheel uses the 1122 400 1307 Prufrex coil
-
ok, thanks!

Any updates on this?
-
I assume that if the flywheel is off an 064 then the whole bottom end is 064. So, i started from the ground up with an 066 bottom end with the plastic flywheel and built the saw again. Great spark and compression. It's getting fuel. I tried 4 different coils. Still won't run !!! >:( :-[

The 1207 flywheel is a 064 model. This was my fault for even mentioning it.
The 066 early flywheel is a 1209.

Make sure there are no bare spots in you ignition lead, may be it is grounding out once you have it hooked back up to the plug. Just a thought as you said you have great spark but maybe when it is all put together it may be grounding. Could be a bad air leak some where as well. If you are running the poly flywheel the coil you should be using is part number 1122 400 1314 or 0000 400 1305 or 0000 400 1303 the last 2 numbers are the prior numbers from the first one. Most of the coils I have seen have the part number embossed in them.
