Title: Vintage top handle
Post by: brettl on February 20, 2014, 08:56:01 pm
I have a Stihl top handle, almost identicle in appearance to my 020AVP rear handle. Where my 020AVP rear handle has the model cast on left and right sides, the top handle in question has only a place for a badge on the rear left side. So my question is, where can I find the serial number on this saw? I've looked it over and it's not on the outside, nor is it under the chain cover. At this time, I don't have a way to take and upload pictures. Thanks, Brett

Check under the clutch side of the muffler. That's where it is on my 032 AV.

Thanks for the tip. Wasn't there though. I'm afraid it may have been a tag or label of some type that came off. It may be under the left cover somewhere.  I don't want to take this off if I don't have to to make it run because it looks like a pain but I'd like to know for sure what model this is. Other ideas? Still looking. :)

Well, I think you already responded correctly to your question, but cannot you put up a pic or two?  Most of the guys here could tell you what you need to know, if we knew what you were looking at....

I know Fish, but right now I have no way of taking a picture. I'll have to buy or borrow a digital camera.

EDIT: Pointless post. I was able to attach a picture from Chainsaw Collectors, provided by Magnus. This is a great site with really helpful folks that I would encourage anyone with an interest in old saws to check out.

This is a pic taken from another site. The top handle is a dead ringer for mine with 1 exception, my top handle has the same fuel tank cover as the rear handles pictured, minus the badge that would indentify the saw. So now I wonder how many, if any, other Stihl saws might look the same to outward appearances. If none do, I may have identified this saw. If there are, then I may yet need a serial number or other small things to look for beyond the obvious, cosmetic things.

Thanks H2H. It slipped my mind that you had posted this in my 020AVP posts with a top handle picture as well. Now I just need to find out if other Stihls shared this same case design. If they didn't, my top handle may well be a 020. Got to find that serial number though to make sure.

Actually the serial numbers won't help at all.

Why not? I've read on different forums of people sending them to Stihl to find the details of their saws. ???

The newer models would be in their data base, but not the old units.
