Title: Question....
Post by: SDB777 on February 22, 2014, 08:02:48 am
Was 'cruising' YouTube and came across "The Chainsaw Guy"....he was running a Stihl XXX on the bench, did a few throttle 'burps' and then did the strangest thing I've seen to date.  He grabbed the starter cord, pulled it out maybe 12-14 inches and turned the saw off.

What does this do, or not do?

Is there any evidence that doing this makes the saw last longer?

Old saws will rip the cord through the handle if you don't do that like the Mac 125.

Good to know...I don't have that saw, but I do have a few 80+cc sized saws.  Guess it can't hurt to try it?

Thanks much!!!!

What actually happens is the saw hits compression as it's winding down which will kick the piston backwards .

So holding the starter rope, instead of the rope knot being ripped through the handle-the handle could get ripped through your fingers(thus saving the knot, but possibly dislocating a finger)....maybe this is starting to sound like a bad idea, I can replace knots but my old fingers--not so much ;D ;D

It's not bad. It beats rewinding that spring in there if you have to do that.

Friggin springs cut like a scalpel as well! When I have to do them I have a pair of meat cutter's gloves that I wear.

On that Stihl sells still I think a so called EZ start gizmo . All it is is a compression spring inside the handle .I think the idea is it allows some inertia on a pull over plus it would offer some buffer on a shut down.

Fact Baileys sold a clone at one time .Don't know the politics involved .Either there wasn't any money in it or Stihl being Stihl whined about it as seems to be their mode of operation.Baileys should have made the thing McCulloch yellow maybe instead of Stihl orange . ;)

Couple years back Gregg G sent Bradley David a whole slew of parts of which he brought to Bill Poors GTG . Pistons ,those starters ,just a bunch of stuff .I got several of the small size and hung one on a 200T and sent one to Butch in Louisiana .They work great .

That chainsaw guy does that on all his videos.   He does it because of kick back when shutting the saw off.

I never do it my self and I have some fairly good size saws.   Never seen a problem yet.  Probably a little show for the camera.

I think with some of the old saws with a over running type bearing on the starter pulley, it was important to do that, With the spring loaded finger pawls like on todays chainsaws, it is not necessary.

When you talk about an over running type are you talking about the friction shoe setup that a lot of older stihls ran, example 041,090.

Some had a directional over-run bearing in the starter

If the engine turns in reverse even a small amount it engages the bearing and jerks the handle off the rope

Al, your thinking of 'Elasto-start'.
