Title: Husqvarna 261 262
Post by: man of stihl on May 30, 2011, 06:05:10 pm
I'm changing a friends Husqvarna 261 into a 262 by installing a 262 piston in place of the dished 261 piston. I widened the exhaust and intake. Then i blended in the lower transfers to the crankcase. I took a pic of one side stock and the other side blended. (http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g457/rjcfritz/sawpics049.jpg) (http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g457/rjcfritz/sawpics050.jpg)

Its looking good! I am in the middle of porting my 394 and was wondering if blending my lower transfers would help or not. I left the lowers alone moved the uppers towards the intake .2" and widened the intake and exhaust ports.

This the first time i have messed with the lower transfers other than just cleaning them up. What i read is when you blend them your rpm's improve. We shall see. ;) What did you use to grind out your upper transfers? i dont think i have the right tools for that.

262xp comparison to other saws I have had in same class. I have always sold the 262xp off for the good money they bring.

3750 60cc run right with the stock 262xp's I had in the past and I tested one back to back with this one. 3750 was right on the heels in cut and 3750 feels to have just a slight torque disadvantage.

While out cutting firewood and switching from 262 and 3750 back and forth with another cutter, both of use using the saws preferred the 3750 feel and handling in our hands. 365 special just eats them all IMO.

That 365 does look REAL good. Especially for being bone stock. I was kinda shocked to see the 261/262 cylinder was like a Stihl where the cylinder sits on top of the case instead of down in like all the other huskys Ive worked on. And also whats the point of a dished piston in the 261?

I used an 1/8" thick grinding stone on a dremel to get in there and blend the uppers.   I am a little unclear on the lowers, they improve does that mean they get higher or they hold in the cut better?

fair enough you will have to let us know how it turns out, I can always blend my lowers if it helps.

sounds like it is running pretty good for you. I am hoping to make a video up of my 394 porting job. I have it set fairly rich yet at 12,800rpm but it sure pulls like a tank. I don't think it will win any speed races but the torque that is available is very very impressive.

Yeah. I think it runs good. But its hard to tell where the improvement came. From the porting or the 262 flat top piston. My compression went from 135 psi to 165.

I would say a little of both, and that is a good healthy compression jump too.

I picked up this 261 today. low comp. I looked through the spark plug hole and the cylinder looks good. (http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g457/rjcfritz/001-9_zps92e9fcf1.jpg) (http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g457/rjcfritz/002-8_zps2681a840.jpg)

Found it where the 262xp and 365 SP with same chain was tested back to back.

261 was a deturned 262 for home owners, the dish dropped the C/R a bit. I am doing one right now 261 with the piston out of a 365 special. More compression height and slab sided instead of windowed. Have done many of what you just completed, turns a home owner saw into a gooooooood runner.

Look at the muffler on the 261, remove the front bracket which should have a little vent in the front of it. Behind that a screen and then the front of the muff which has a little hole (half inch or so). The 262 muff is completely open behind the bracket and it has a vent on the side. You can use the 262 muff on the 261 and then use the bracket and screen off the 261 and viola instant dual port muff!
