Title: 041 coil to replace points????
Post by: mark3885 on March 09, 2014, 10:48:44 am
Since my 028 coil / points conversion went so good, is there a coil that I can use on my early 80's   041 Farm Boss to eliminate the points? The saw runs good with the points , but in the future if the points go, i'd swap in a new coil if possible.

I have not ever tried doing anything on that series other than replace what came on it originally, and never tried to splice one of the trigger units in there
probably due to size/logistics, but mostly because I worked for dealerships that pushed to sell the customer a new saw, and would look poorly on me spending time trying to get an old saw running.  I am sure that some of the guys here have played around with this problem a bit.

The big problem with the 031/041 Stihls with points was the condenser would dry up. The modern day epoxy filled capacitors seemed to fix the problem.

The factory electronic trigger versions had a different flywheel with different timing.

Yes, it was the same deal with the 030/031 saws for me, I knew that there was a correct trigger unit out there aftermarket from the guys online, but I never had experience with one, but the 032, I had that old Shindaiwa trigger, put it on, and was like magic, and that is the same configuration as the
Oregon unit.

My problem with these old saws, is that when I get one, my deal is to part them out on e-bay.....  And not fix them.

I was just wondering ,since the 028 fix was easy ,  the saw runs great and I know I'll have it for a long time.
Does the 041 need any special cam to set the points like the 028?

No, remove the fanwheel, there should be access holes for that.

Will a Nova module work with an 041?

I don't know the answer to that Mark. I will snoop around today and try to find out. Can't do anything else snowing like hell here. Supposed to get 19 to 24 inches today, welcome to the great white North!
