are the black ID tags older?? also workin on a 1982 266se thats scored. what is the difference betwen the two. i noticed the piston is a lil different. XP piston is on the left

Very late 70's - very early 80's

That black tag reads 1988 week 15 - so that's a 266xp.
The other one is a very early (1982) 266se, that is old enough to have a smaller carb than the late se and xp ones.
Of course that's about what the saws originally were, you never know what has been changed on older saws. ;)

thanks. im changing the SE over to a 272xp. i already have the intake setup from a 61, just gotta order a cyl. is there any clearance issues using the 272 cyl on a 266 with the top cover??
-
I believe there are issues getting enough clearance for the plug. There may also be some problems associated with top cover bolt placement.

That's what I believe as well, but I am no expert on those saws.
The idea of using parts from the 61 doesn't sound "right" to me, at least not if it is an white or black/grey top - but I don't know for sure. Those older 61s came with a too small carb for the 272 top end as well (same carbs as the early 266's).
Hopefully some real expert will turn up here, like Spike60?

the block is broke by the choke lever on my 266xp, so i used a 85 61 block and all the 266xp parts bloted on. ill get the right carb for the 272 when i do the SE

i just realized theres two different top covers for the 266...... SE on the left,XP on the right. so maybe the XP cover it tall enough for the 272 cyl
