Title: Poulan 3000 to 3400
Post by: KilliansRedLeo on March 19, 2014, 05:45:29 pm
I am NOT a Poulan guy but own two, 3000 and another that I cannot remember what it is. Anyway, I got a 3400 top end from another member here for $15. I think I remember reading that the 3000 & 3400 are the same saw. So, can I swap the 3400 top end on to the 3000? And is there anything to gain by doing so I mean besides .4 CI?

Not the same at all. Both great saws though.

3300 335 54cc will go onto the 3000 305 49cc and other smaller cc in series.

3400 3700 3800 4000 same series.  If wrong correct me. Not ones I am into.

You are correct.    The 3400 and 3800 have the chrome plating on the piston and are used with the bare aluminum cylinders.
You can also throw the 375 and 395 in there also.

What you can do is put a 3700 cylinder and piston on a 3400.    Then you will have a 60cc saw with a little better compression.    These are easy saws to work on and with some mild mods can be made to run pretty good.

I was also looking at the Poulan power head only weights and it looks like it will be around 14. 7 lbs. for a 3400.
Not a light saw by today's standards and not high revving.

I do have a 3700 here though that I modified using some advice from brokenbudget that turns 13k with the bar and chain on free spinning.   I have ran a 24" bar on it in the past and it performed pretty good with it.

I have the parts right now to build 2 more 3700's one in red craftsman that was a 3800 and the other was a 3400 that I am converting over to the 3700.

One more point is there are still a lot of good used parts around and for bearings and seals there are people who have researched out where and what to use since oem is long gone on these saws.

I'll bet I know where you got that idea Tim.  There were some grey/black Craftsman saws of the 3400-4000 series that were labeled "3.0".  These were different than the "3.0" labeled Craftsman saws of the 3000 family.  The two saw families are easy to tell apart.  One major difference is that the 3400-4000 series all have the mag rear handle, while the 2800-3600 (etc) family that the 3000 belongs in has the plastic rear handle/fuel tank casting.

The 3.0 labeled 3400-4000 series saws in fact WERE 3400's (you probably read that before and mixed "3.0" with "3000").  Same displacement, but 'falsely' underrated for a price point.  A case of getting more than you paid for.  Those have a different Sears 358.xxxxx model number than the 3.4 labeled 3400's, but they share piston/rings/cylinder part numbers with the 3.4 branded 3400's  The 3.0 labeled 3400's seem to have 'numberless' starter cover and clutch cover decals (with the bar size and displacement labeling instead being on the bar............such as "3.0-16").  The 3.4/3.7 labeled saws in this series usually have the "3.4-16" or 3.7-18" integrated into those little striped cover decals....

Can also lump the 2700 and 2800 into the 3000 series saws. The 2700 and 2800 are both 42 cc and I don't know why they had both saws.

the 2700-2800 were 46cc, not 42. the number designation was changed from one year to the next. 2700 was then used on the same chassis as the pp295/4620.

Thank you Eccentric, your assumption is correct. Like I said I am NOT a Poulan guy! There certainly was a lot of everything in the mix for these saws. I will post pictures of what I have and you guys can tell me. The 3000 I have is a Poulan labeled 3000, goat vomit green with black tank/handle, don't remember if it is metal or plastic. Came with plastic clutch cover and no chain brake. I found a metal NOS cover with tubular brake handle that I put on it. My wife sometimes uses that saw and I did not feel comfortable with her using a saw without a functioning brake. The saw actually runs very well. Perhaps I should just leave it alone!

I think Poland would take a parts inventory and decide what model they were going to make and market. There's all kinds of ideas and combinations tried. Some of which were never seen again?

I like it too, just reminds me of a 1970s Suzuki RN-250 MX bike. Would be interesting to find the paint and match it to the Poulan color.

I was comparing a 335 54cc and 380 60cc cylinder yesterday. The inside measurement of front holes was about 3mm narrower total on 3000 49cc cyl going by inside side of hole.

So thinking just slotting the 380 holes this would bolt on after that.

One could use the bigger intake boot and carb too for little more gains.

Tim's poulan 3000 he was talking about. With nice chain brake side cover too.

Kevin I think I can salvage the 60cc jug I took off my 380 & will try it on the other 2700 if you get it done before me let me know how it goes.
