Just taking a few picutures of the wood pile. A lot of it is cotton wood but if you look around at the Pics there are not a lot of trees here so I take what I can get for free.
How about the rest of ya got any pics of your firewood stash. Its been a long winter maybe not much left.
-
My stash is mostly black ash that died from the EAB in the yard and neighbor's yards. I do have some silver maple that I haven't finished blocking up and splitting yet. The Silver maple was just cut this past late summer and fall by Asplundh for the power company.
-
I able was to scrounge up some more firewood. Those are the centers from large cable reels. Stacked about 6' tall.
-
Getting to be a big pile of firewood.

Yes my goal is to get a year or 2 ahead of what I might use for one winter.

Nice stacks

Nice stacks
Thanks
-
Nice piles of wood there.

I had started back getting in the act of cutting firewood here. But then I bought my Logosol timber jig and I am now torn between splitting firewood or cutting lumber. I have 6 acres here but it has been so wet I have not been able to do either one. Will post some pictures when it dries up some.

That would be interesting please do.

The wood fence continues to grow. Got a roof on the house now.

Looking better out there now. Not much to block the wind there in trees is there.
-
And there is always plenty of wind.
The air is generally dry and air conditioning is not common in homes.
-
You guys are correct. No trees to block the wind and it is very dry. The dryness causes my nose to bleed sometimes.
On the news last night they we're saying that Cheyenne Wyoming is ranked 3rd in the lower 48 for having the most wind.
But I really like the wide open space.
-
That dry air is something else out there. I was stationed in Idaho during my Navy days. (Sounds funny, I know but we had a training facility up there.) But, the air was so dry my lips split open once in the winter. I came back east in the summer and I shed dry skin like a snake for a week. Firewood has to dry quickly. I would think milling boards would be a challenge to keep the ends from checking to death. Would take a lot of Anchorseal.

Went to the Mountains today to get some more beetle kill pine. It was great today with mild temps. I took the Poulan 335 predator. I put a 3/8ths sprocket nose on that bar which used to be .325. As you can see the saw works great.
-
I got some more free firewood today. I believe it is American or Siberian Elm.
-
Here are a few pics of the upstairs wood stove and a small amount in the garage for winter.
Then the others are the downstairs wood stove and a small amount of wood in the basement next to the guitars.
-
I have a bunch of Chinese elm trees in the yard and it burns real good in the wood stove.
I don't know if it is related to that Siberian elm or not?
-
The new place Roger?
-
Cool house! Nice unobstructed view of mountains and sky, sweet!

The Chinese Elm has a bark that is very different from Siberian Elm. So far it is the only decent hardwood that I have found here in Wyoming. I have seen green Ash here but have not got a hold of any yet, but I understand it makes good firewood also.
-

Yep things are gradually being put into place. The house is really air tight and so far stays warm with very little heat.

I love watching the thunderstorms roll in from 200 miles away and seeing how much snow the Rocky Mountains received from any recent storms. Also at night there are some pretty spectacular lightening strikes.
-
I would love to live out there. Wyoming or Montana area.
-
I like those floors upstairs in you new home. Everything looks nice.

Thanks. It was a long time from the start to the end but worth waiting for.

I'm sure you will enjoy for years to come. I'm still in my new house I had built in a soy bean field 42 years ago.

Wow that is a long time in one place. This will be my last.
-
It is related. Used to grow em when I tried the nursery business back in the early 80's. Can't remember all the botanical names any more.

I used to have them all lined up on the floor and decided that there had to be a better way. You now have a project your son might like.
-
Do you have more chainsaws or guitars?
-
I have way more saws than guitars. I have more pocket watches than chainsaws though.
-
Heh heh
-

That is some seriously flat country, no trees.
Great stacks of wood.

I was just wondering what you guys use for fire starters. I was using news paper for awhile but I do not like the smoke that comes from using it.
So I bought some of those small paper cups the kind you would use in the bath room.
I pack them with noodles from my wood cutting and then pour a little lamp oil in it. I have a air tight container that I keep them in so the oil does not evaporate. I can keep about 12 at a time in the container I have.
These things work really well, they have a long burn time give off no smoke and have no odor to them when burning.
I bought a quart of lamp oil and figure I can get about 60 to 70 fire starters out of it. Time will tell.

Birch bark is good
-
In the Southeastern USA there is a long leaf pine tree. The heart wood of this tree is very resinous and will burn like the head of a match. It is easily started.
People in that area use it as a fire starter. They call it fat lighter'd wood. Long leaf pine stumps are a good source of this kindling if you're into busting up stumps.
They will keep a bucket or box of fat kindling near the stove or fireplace.
Addendum: Actually a lot of pine varieties will have resinous fat wood in the stump. It will never rot in the resinous part of the stump. So an old stump 20 years old would be a great source of kindling.
-
An old mate of mine uses dried orange skin halves or peeled orange skin.
-
I just got my propane tank filled on August 1st. I had not filled since last November. I got the bill and
My propane costs came out to 30 dollars a month. You got to love those wood burning stoves and all my work gathering firewood sure paid off.

Went to the mountains today to get some more wood getting ready for winter.
Took a few pics this time.
-
long sleeves?
-
A few more pics showing the sequence of cuts.
-
long sleeves?
I always wear long sleeves with them buttoned up real tight. It keeps all the bugs and crap from getting all over my arms. Just a personal preference. They do not get in the way because they are snap up western shirts they have a snap where the gap is right before the wrist that can be closed that way to prevent from snagging on things.
-
Here I was starting to limb it after falling the tree.
-
Then time for alittle break.
Load up the truck.
I cut down 4 trees and got alittle more then half a cord.
-
Good job.
-
Good job.
Thanks Jim. My wife always comes along and will help clear some of the branches out of the way after cutting them.
That is a big time saver for me and helps with my back from all the bending over.
-
+1 That's the greatest when the wife is along.
Went wood cutting on Fallen trees
Wife ran the saw. (32 cc)
I sharpened chains and stacked wood in the truck
Grand daughter hauled wood in the Rhino from where the wife was cutting to the truck.
We all kept busy.
-
Looks like a great day there.
Guessing a 335 was used?
-
Cool pics, looks like a nice day to be in the mountains.

That was a 365 with a 60 DL chain and bar. I was not sure I would like using the shorter bar but to be honest it was less weight and easier handling when cutting limbs. So it worked great.
-

It was a good day for cutting. There was a little wind which helps keep the bugs away.
I am always talking about going to the mountains and cutting wood so this time I thought I would get a few pics.

Winter is coming..

Wow you got a dusting of snow already?

Just some old pics
+23c / 74°F today :)

Whew good deal on old pics. I do remember snow and cold in Sept in MT. Never in Aug though.
I was getting ready to ask where the heck you were.
-
Had me faked out. Where is your wood for this winter. Last winter is long gone. Up in smoke.
