Title: RCEXL
Post by: aclarke on March 28, 2014, 01:42:02 am
Anyone here have experience with the RCEXL electronic ignition kits for R/C motors?  it's a total loss nicad battery powered ignition system with Hall effect trigger, some have advance/regard programming. I tried converting a 372 hotsaw to this system 4-5 years ago and had nothing but problems. Most likely a defective unit, but none the less I got frustrated and scrapped the idea. Anyone have any experience with these or other ignition kits?

I have a lot of CH and RCEXL ignition systems.

CH is made in USA and RCEXL is from China

They run on four nicads and a 2000 mah battery would last you all day at a rally.

They only retard for starting and by 5000 rpm are back to full advance. They retard automatically when you jerk on the cord.

They are normally set at 28 degrees BTDC as a maximum advance.

The timing set up is done statically with a degree wheel.

The Hall Effect sensor is polarity sensitive so can be turned over to trigger by the first pole of the flywheel magnet or the second pole.

The spark event occurs as the magnet leaves the sensor.

You can buy a RCEXL unit without the batteries or switch for just under $50. The CH is more expensive and can be made more customized if need be.

The existing chainsaw switch can be use to connect or interrupt the battery connection for the ignition unit.

They can be set up from the factory to connect to a standard 14mm NGK BPMR 6A or the 6F or the little 10mm plugs like is on a 550XP or 562XP

The unit that I tied to make Work had a small 3/32 rare earth magnet as the trigger and a pick up that plugged into the box, are the units you use the same?

Yes, but you can just use the existing flywheel magnets.

Ok, so is the conversion done on the zenoahs to make them start better? Hotter spark? Have you had any issues with the US made units?  Thanks Adam

The USA made units are the best but they are more expensive. The Chinese just copy the USA units. However most Chinese ignitions are terrible. The only good Chinese one is the RCEXL. The RCEXL is very reliable.

You can get these ignitions for use with LiPo batteries as well as Nicad's. Call these guys and talk to them.

Thanks for the info.  May try it again and see if I can make it work on a hotsaw. Should burn the nitro more efficiently

Good  luck and ask more questions as the problems come up.

One usual problem with these is a person sets them up and fires the device without the spark plug in place and without the threaded body of the plug grounded to the chassis.

The spark will then jump inside the Hall Effect timing sensor and blow it out. Then the ignition will pop once when you turn it on but not fire when it is supposed to.

The timing sensor has three wires. Positive red, ground is black, and signal is yellow or sometimes white.

The power lead is just two wires. Red is positive and black is negative.

Some have a two wire tach lead which is like ground and signal.

These devices are typically shielded on the plug wire for they are used with radio controlled devices and the spark drives the radios nuts unless it is shielded and a resistor plug is used.

Thank you.  Sounds exactly like the issue I had with the 372!!
