Title: 034 Super VS. 036 Pro
Post by: brettl on April 04, 2014, 12:01:09 am
Looking at the specs on Bills, the 034 Super and 036 appear to be the same saw. The 036 Pro isn't listed. I've run across a 034 Super local. Very nice but priced at $300, although I think he'll deal some. I've wanted a good 036 Pro and know I can buy one for the price of this 034 but if they are, in fact the same saw, I'll go back for a close inspection of the 034.

Even though the piston/cylinder interchange, a lot of the other parts do not. Being as the 036 is much more popular, down the road, you will find the 036 PRO spares much more available.

Hi 660. Thanks for your answer. Just for my own education on this, give me a few "for instances". For example, do major engine components like the crankcase and crankshaft interchange or is it "outer" parts like flywheel, clutch, etc that you refer to? Thank you

The outer parts are what's different

Yes, AFAIK the cylinder, piston, and crank are interchangeable?

I took in trade a 034 with 036 cylinder.  Ran great and yes there was some differences in covers, dust covers, af, etc that didnt fit this 034 from 036.

$300 isnt a bad price. They go higher than that on ebay all the time. I've seen some on ebay with $425 price tags. I've been offered $300 for my 036 an its needs the brake assembly replaced. A friend of mine is itching to own it.

$300 personally I would be selling.

I sold the 034/036 with 20" for $200 and a just rebuilt 036 pro for $320 (nice one too).

feebay is inflated IMO with folks paying way way way to much.

I cant't bring myself to part with it. other than having the carb rebuilt its been too reliable to sell.

After taking a good look at the 034 and 036, I'm really tempted to sell off my 029 Super, 4 028's, 390 and 039, and a few others that weigh more but put out less power than the 034 and 036. I've got a 440 and 441, otherwise I might hang onto the 390. So I may be in the market for a 036 pro or two pretty soon. It'll depend on what I think of the Makita 6401 I just bought. Can't wait for it to arrive! Always been curious to try a Dolmar. diggersdad is telling me that I'll reach the 6401 over the 440 and that he sold his 360 and 361 after using the Dolmar 6401 for a week. Hmmm.

Anyhow, I thing I'll go back to the pawn shop where I saw the 034 Super. If it's still there, and if he'll allow me to remove the muffler and everything looks good, I may try to make a trade with him.

The 036 is much smaller and lighter than a 6401 on the outside. The 036 PRO is a classic of all time.

That's what I'm seeing looking at specs. Lighter weight and same power. Being a Stihl guy anyway, if the 034 or 036 performs as well or anywhere close to the 6401, I'll go with the Stihl.

Edited due to new thread strictly on this subject.

I think the 6401 is slightly stronger but if you timed them both with the same chain and felt the weight and balance of the saws AND being a Stihl guy anyway, you might go with the Stihl.

Yeah, I think you're probably right. The guys at the Rental Ranch have been great over the years to so I'd really hesitate to quit on them, especially to go mail order with Baileys for the blue Dolmars.
