So I have a Husqvarna 371 parts saw in need of bearings and seals. It used 6202C3 bearings. I have a bunch of Nachi 6202 2RS 24000 rpm bearings. What I usually do is pop out the seals and install. However it has been going round in my head to only remove the seal from one side of the bearing and install them with the seal facing out and use the regular factory seals also.
Not sure why this could not be done (belt and suspenders sort of thing) but there must be some drawback (expense?) because I have never seen the manufacturers do it. Might be premature wear on the crankshaft seals because of no lubrication. Also, would probably need to use vitron seals.
Opinions?

Are you saying remove the factory rubber seal from one side and retain the seal on the outside?
If so, I've done that recently on a 3120 race saw. packed grease between the two.

A little oil between the two might work better? Migrate around and lube the lip.

Aclarke, that is exactly what I am saying! My thought was that the crank seals would go dry and life expectancy would be neigh on to zip. The grease or perhaps 80 weight oil would probably make them last longer. OK, now the big question, why did you do it, I sort of thought no one but I would come up with that hair brained scheme. My thought was that perhaps one would get a little better crankcase seal

Oil would likely be a better choice to migrate into the seals. My thought in doing this was to limit the oem seals exposure to methanol and nitro which is hard on the Buna rubber. I found Viton seals in that size but they're costly...
Can't see any reason NOT to do it on a work saw if the seal can get lube?

I get it now, your using bearings that have covers over the balls of the bearing. I think I would remove both sides of the covers. Reason being is alot of crud can build up in that area, and it needs a place to exit the bearing.
