Craftsman Chain Saw 944.414460 46cc 2.8 cubic in. has 18 inch chain (may not be original)
Hello!
I cannot start the chain saw with the pull rope. Repair shop suggests a carburetor rebuild kit (about $40, parts only), but will this make it start 'easy'? The rope only pulls out a few inches and stops. What if I replace the rope?
Compression was tested by same shop and found good.
This is a used item and seller had no problems starting, but probably was gripping the throttle and throttle release together (according to repair shop). I tried that, too, but couldn't start.
Repair shop opened the spark plug and said it was too 'dry', i.e. no discoloration or any carbon, etc. Engine runs well! Fuel was new, synthetic two stroke, 40:1 ratio.
Some sites say it's a Poulan, others say it's a AYP (American Yards Product) - are the parts interchangeable in either case, and what is the model#?

Looks like a 295 or 4620 poulan. Also look under those in poulan board.

So this is a plan:
1. fuel filter, fuel lines, spark plug, up fuel pick (what is it? no diagrams) - clean or replace (reason: didn't smell flooding)
2. replace rope if it's shorter than required
3. air filter - clean or replace
4. clean or replace: carb, ignition module, spark arrestor, anything else?
I need this 18" to work, so suggestions welcome!

Moving you to the poulan board. There are guys here that know these saws inside and out. Hopefully they will chime in.

Take the starter cover off, remove the top cover also.
When you get the starter cover off then look at the flywheel and make sure nothing is stuck to the magnet or jammed in the fins.
With the starter cover off pull the rope and see how far it comes out and then come and let us know what you found.

So the rope is about three chain links long; kinda short?

Should take 30 to 36 inches of rope. Give or take. Local store here about .25 a foot.

That definitely looks like a 295/4620 variant to me. Notice how the EPA sticker has a Poulan part # (530 055221) on the right edge. Most Poulan part numbers have a 5300 prefix.
Interesting how some of the Sears MN prefixes are starting to change. The Husqvarna Group (or whatever they're called now) has owned both Poulan and AYP for a while now (and Electrolux owned them both before that). Despite that, AYP and Poulan manufactured Sears products have continued to keep the 'pre Electrolux/HVA Group' prefixes. For decades, Poulan has been 358 and AYP has been 917.
This 944 Sears prefix is new to me. Maybe all the Husqvarna Group stuff is getting that 944 prefix now. I've seen one or two of the Sears branded chinese made 'mcculloch' (no caps, as it's a mac in name only) saws with 358 model # prefixes. Now that's really weird to me, as those share nothing with anything built by Poulan. The McCulloch name is part of the Husqvarna Group as well however. McCulloch had a 989 prefix for a while. Saw that on McCulloch products sold by Sears in the 1980's and early 1990's. The machines were still branded McCulloch (instead of Sears/Craftsman) but had small Sears MN/SN decals (with the 989 prefix) on them as well.
I just checked a more up to date Sears/Craftsman MN prefix list. Husqvarna is listed as 944, which looks to now include other brands within the Husqvarna group, jugging by this latest saw.
