My 028WB Starts & runs like a champ for 4-5 min and then dies. It will restart after sitting for 10 - 15 min and run for another 4-5 min. ???
Any ideas

It is either fuel or spark.
Look for each one?

028 WB it's common to drop spark on these old points style saws.
Try pulling the flywheel and cleaning setting the points and see if it improves.

Cleaning and resetting the points can be a problem, just pop on a good used 029/ms290 coil, and leave the flywheel alone.

My 028 WB was purchased in either 1980 or 81. It has two magnets on the flywheel approximately 5/16" apart. My question is whether this saw can be converted to electronic ignition with the coil you mentioned in the message above. If so, could you elaborate on the wiring for a bona fide layman? What does the spade terminal connect to? I know this saw is very old but after 33+ years of use, it's simply hard to part with. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

Have you checked compression after it gets hot?

Yes the 290 coil will work on your 028 as long as it has an aluminum flywheel. One terminal is for ground and the other for ignition. Yellow is usually ground and black is ignition. The wires are used to kill the spark when you want to turn the saw off. The spade goes to the coil and round goes to ground.

Yeah the ms290/029 coil works fine, all it has is the spade/kill terminal, that is just to shut it down, otherwise, the flywheel revolves=spark....
