Title: 451E Fuel Leaks Bad
Post by: bobbyg on October 07, 2014, 02:27:28 pm
Had gummy varnish in tank and filled tank with lacquer thinner and left it in overnight. It's now leaking like a sieve and I wonder if a seal got eaten away by the solvent. It also appears that the tank is integral with the entire body of the saw (and crankcase) so does this all need to come apart to fix. Any advice?

Lacquer thinner is pretty harsh stuff, may have eaten the crankcase gasket. Have you cleaned up the carb yet?

Sawagain.com. has a clean used 451 crankcase and crank assembly for $35. Be a cheap easy swap if you want to fix the saw

Thanks for all the advice. It's probably too early to change the entire casing so I'll break the unit apart and inspect the crankcase gasket which was probably destroyed by the lacquer thinner.

Has anyone had any experience accessing the gas tank with this model (or a similar model) of chainsaw? Before I break it apart I just wanted to know what parts should be treated carefully and if it's better to come in from one side or the other to avoid disturbing the crank, bearings, etc.

Tank is integral to the case halves I believe, you'll have to totally dissemble and split the cases.
Case gasket may be hard to find, you may have to make one...

Thanks Kevin.  i did a quick online search and couldnt find any gaskets. Fairly easy to make one or more internet searching may find one as well. Crank seals should be replaced too, likely easier to find too.
