Art's thread on 1st Partner got me thinking about what was your first Poulan. How many will admit it and was yours a keeper. ;)
Mine was a little poulan 2000 33cc trim saw in 94. Has worked great for intended purpose and only a failed coil change so far. Passed it onto my dad to use for a light weight trim saw on the land.
What made me go with poulan back then was dad had bought a brand new poulan 3300 in early 80's it seems. Still going strong with only bar, fuel and impulse line replacements. Maybe a carb rebuild, I cant remember. :-[
Hoping to find guys that bought those older poulans and their experience with them back in the day.
-
Mine was also a poulan 2000. Bought it back in 91 if I remember. I still have the saw to this day. Replaced the gas line a few years back and that is all I have done to it. I cut alot of firewood with it till I got bigger saws to use. Rick!
-
An S-25 ,some where around 1975 .Actually it was marketed by Dayton and painted orange .On sale $139.95 .The green Poulans sold for 169 .
I still have it and it will fire on 4 even after sitting for 6 months .I've never had the carb off that little thing in all these years .One fuel line and that's all I've ever done to it .
It still has the original 14" hard nose bar but I've reworked it several times on a belt sander .
-
Mine was 4200 w24" bow bar. Bought it new in 1978. Has not seen much use (1 chain). Left it @ my buddy's house he loaned my saw to a friend of his. Burned up clutch and chain cutting up a live oak. He did repair it before I got it back. HE LOANED MY SAW to a guy that makes things fit with a 12# sledge hammer, no joke. Pissed is not even the word. That won't happen again. My saw goes home with me now no exceptions. Now has a place on the shelf.

Some people have the nerve of a dead bear .I once had to track down my machinery trailer that was "borrowed " by a buddy then loaned to another guy .I was a little miffed to say the least .
After that I parked a D4 Cat in front of it . ;D
-
Got my first one in late 1979 or early 1980. A used S25CVA and I used it hard and often for at least 25 years.
I heated my house by itself for a year or two till I bought a 306A to go with it.
-
Surprisingly that little orange saw of mine would outcut much larger saws back in the day .Nobody would believe that little rascal could run like that including myself .Of course things have changed over the last 35 years .
Some day if I round up a couple more on the cheap I might soup one just to see what it can do .They pop up every so often with really not much wrong with them other than the fact that whoever owns them can't make them putt .On that though goes the story with a lot of saws .
-
Al your right about that, those little saws ran really good and cut fast. I used to make bets all the time about being able to outrun a Super XLAO or such through a 12-16" log. I always won those matches.
There still surprisingly fast compared to so called modern saws. They will stomp a MS191T or such with no problem, I have done it. I had a MS200T in here last week, got to run it and I didnt get the chance to run it head to head with a S25 but will say that the S25 is not all that far behind it like some guys would like to tell you.
-
They will run neck and neck with a Stihl 020 av top handle which was the forerunner of the 020T/Ms 200 T .Plus they weigh just a tad less .They lack just a bit to be able to outgun a well tuned 200T.
-
My first Poulan was a 3400 with 18" bar. Bought it new in 1986. Just under $300 with tax as I recall. :)
It was my only saw, up untill 2008. Funny how for 22 years, it cut all my wood. Now, it just doesn't get used much, if at all. Have got many to choose from now. But, if left with just the 3400, I think I could survive. ;D

Ahem, mumble ,actually I have somewhat recant my statement about an s-25 being able to almost out gun a 200t .
Much to my surprise several did this last weekend .Never say never . ;)

Isnt that the truth. Some of those ported S25 were just mean sounding little saws and cut great.
I must be getting old, because I had told Brad that dang saw was just to darn loud.
-
My first Poulan was a 3400 I bought brand spanking new in 1982. Cut a lot of wood with that saw but moved it on to buy a big Stihl when I was cutting more dry redgum. Have always regretted selling it but in those days I did not have the money for two saws. Still love the Poulans though.

The first Poulan I ever observed was during a visit to the Lumbard dealer in 1960. I remember seeing them over there and they were lime green. Was more interested in Macs at the time though.
In more recent years (fall 1998) , I visited the local TSC store and there was a 1997 Poulan 3500, type III, 60cc saw setting there all covered in oil with a sign on it that said $75 as is - no warranty. The oil was the only bad appearing thing about the saw. The chain was pretty sharp and had never been sharpened and there was not a scratch on it.
I got permission to take it out back and run it. It started right up very rich, so I bought it.
Got it home, reset the high speed needle, and sawed a tank of gas through it. It was my primary (Pro) saw for several years. In more recent times, I have had to change the fuel filter and put diaphragms in the carb.
The best I can tell the 3500 is pretty much the same as the 3750 except it doesn't have a chain brake and the air filter cover is a little different.
I had it at the GTG at Gregg's last week. It started and ran like it was supposed to.
Here's how it looked back in the spring.

On that loud business Kevin I've got to be more prudent about those ear plugs myself .
I spent much of last week felling and draging out ash logs plus the firewood . Between an assortment of saws ,one being a gutted muffler S-25 have a little rigning in the ear .Got some dandy saw logs though . ;D

The 3500 reminds me of the 365 and the air filter set up too.

Also my first 3750 didnt have chain brake, just a handguard on handle.
County Fair racing pic, only the dolmar 6400 beat it for the first 4 places, I got 5th 0-65cc work saw.

Yes they are pretty much identical except for the color and the wording.

Not only my first Poulan but my very first saw. 4200 w/22-24" (don't know how to measure a bow)bow bar bought new in 78 I think. Hasn't cut much wood. The original chain would still be on it but my Buddy??? loaned my saw to an IDIOT! He burned up the chain and the clutch cutting up an American Live Oak (Quercus Virginiana). Don't leave my saws at anybodys house any more. Lesson learned saw & so called Buddy! The IDIOT did send it to saw shop and was repaired when I got it back. This the guy that rolled a ring to hold a propane bottle on a trailered cooker, put the bottle in the ring beat it in w/hammer cause ring was too small. Next step to remove bottle he fired up the acetylene to cut it out! Again I say IDIOT!!!!!

3400!
Absolutely fantastic saw! Cut ALL my wood for 15 years and surprised a LOT of guys.
Bought it on time after a storm and paid for it cleaning up blowdowns in the neighborhood.
I'd still kill the S.O.B. that stole it today if I could find him!!!

My first Poulan saw was made for Craftsman by Poulan, I was an all red, Sears Craftsman Model 358.352070. Was 2.0cc, 3/8LP, .050 chain with laminated sprocket nose 14" bar
Acquired it from a fellow fireman that was an arborist on his days off. Had used the saw hard and it had become a parts saw. Paid $12.50 for it, had good compression, but screws, nuts and bolts were missing. Don't know the year of manufacture, I got it in 1980.
I replaced the missing parts and put an new Zip Pen bar and chain on it. This saw was my primary firewood cutting saw until 2004. It did share the wood cutting with a couple of mini Macs and later on a Jonsered 910E to help with bigger logs.
Shortly after I acquired the Craftsman I was cutting wood with a friend that had a lime green Poulan XXV Deluxe, 33cc, 2cin that was an exact duplicate of my Craftsman. He had killed the Poulan by locking up the engine, so he gave it to me for a parts saw. The parts from this saw helped me keep the Craftsman going until 2004. It still would be a runner with a carb rebuild and new fuel line. Looked a little strange when it would sometimes be seen with a lime green pull start housing and the remainder of the saw was red. Two tone Poulan/Craftsman.
The only work I did to the saw over those years was normal maintenance, replaced at least two chains, replaced the fuel line and filter and some new spark plugs. It wasn't necessarily the smoothest running saw, but it always started with a few pulls, just kept running and running. Was always amazed how durable and dependable the saw was.
It has been replaced by several other small to mid sized saws, but still is stored under a work bench in the shop and with some TLC should come back to life. Always was somewhat tough on the operator vibration wise. Had no vibration dampening at all, one of the main reasons it is under the work bench.

Hello I have a chainsaw that looks exactly like the one that W8ye posted, but the sticker on the clutch cover has worn off and I can not identify the chainsaw. The plate on the back of the handle says type iii with a seriel number. I called poulan and they said none of the numbers where the model number and they were t able to identify it by the numbers I am there are two different numbers on the sticker on under the type iii says its the seriel number and the a number that starts with a 97 which I am assuming is the manufacturer year. I looked around the forum I figured it's either a 3300, 3400, or 3500. How do I find out and what's the difference between those three models? Thanks in advance.
William

Take some pictures of your saw(s) and upload the pictures to Photo Bucket,
Then link the pictures to your post. The pictures will be automatically resized to the proper dimensions this way.
We can help identify your saw(s).
I considered my Poulan 3500 be my pro saw for several years. There are several saws along the same lines that were made through out the 90's.
-
I will do that ASAP I appreciate the input
-
I linked the photos of my chainsaw let me know I it works not sure if I did it right thanks again

It could be a 3300 3500 or 3600.
It is NOT a 3400.
You will have to measure the bore to narrow it down much more.
Mike
-
Going by carb cover I would guess 3500 or another using that carb cover. The 3300 used different carb cover. Look at my which poulan is this thread.
What is the type and numbers on the back of rear handle on black part? Enough of us here have the saws to match you up.

Embedding Photobucket pictures in your post.
Go to Photobucket and get your picture on the screen as large as you can make it appear
Place your cursor on the large picture and right click. Choose the option "Copy Image Location" and left click it. This copies the URL of your picture into the desk top.
Go back to Chainsaw Repair and in your post you must use the image or img formatting code first and it must be enclosed in brackets [].
It will look like this [ i m g ] except without the spaces.
Immediately after the image formatting code you paste you image URL by right clicking and then left clicking.
Immediately after your picture URL, you must add the release code which has the brackets on each side and there is a / in front of the word img or image. It will look like this[/img]. Notice it is just like the first one but has the slant in front of the code.
When you post your reply, the embedded image will appear in your post.
I added spaces so this will not work . . . [i m g ] http://your picture URL [ / i m g ]
I will do this fully coded below with a picture of a Poulan 3500

The Type is a Type iii. The number under the type is the seriel number and it is 530-037686. There is number to the left of the seriel number it's on the W.C.I sticker and it is 97-038d00236. I am assuming the 97 is the manufacturer year, but not sure. Thank you all for the responses and instructions on posting pictures.

wy8e look at those numbers on your 3500 to see if they match those posted above.

I keep the Poulan 3500 over at my one son's house. It might be a few days before I'm over there to get the number. I remember from last September that it was a Type III though.
-
I had to go over to my son's house and while there I got the number's off the Poulan 3500
Model 530 037686
Serial 97139D 00840
So William, yours is also a 3500
While down there, I got some big chunks of black walnut to sink a saw into to set the mixture etc.
I've been talking on gmail to another guy with a 3500 and he's having trouble with not running. I've been trying to get him to come over here.

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has any spare parts for a poulan 3500. Mainly the air filter. Mine walked away after I removed it for cleaning. The kids I believe helped it walk away lol. I checked local dealers and they said the air filter is not available. Any ideas on getting a replacement or if another filter will work or any modification I can make. Info is appreciated

No I went online to order it and it already said it was no longer available. It showed out of stock. But I have tracked down a used one from a local repair shop that has a 3500 with a blown piston. He's going to contact the owner of th saw and see if I can get the filter. Keeping my fingers crossed thanks for everything
-
Get the whole saw if available to you. Parts are parts. Plus they are very easy to rebuild even if needing new crank bearings etc.
-
That's what I am trying to do. I got the mechanic working on the owner of the saw to try and let me buy it I hope it works out. I will find out to tomorrow thanks again

Mine was a poulan 306A that has been used ALOT. It does'nt run as good as it used to but I still fire it up once in a while just to make some old school noise.

Hi, new to the thread. Any ideas on which Poulan this one is and whether you can fit a proper chain brake or just the hand guide.

Without measuring the bore it would be hard to tell but that black and white sticker to the right of the rear handle may give you a clue.
My first guess is going to be a 3300 or 3600.
Yes the chainbrake for those is completely contained in the clutch cover, so all you need to do is find the cover for a 3450 if I'm not mistaken.

I may have my 1st Poulan next week if my brother decides to sell it. It's a 8500 he bought new in the mid 1980s. It has a working chainbrake [all saws sold in Canada since 1980 had to have chainbrakes, the Stihl 090 seemed to escape that for a few yrs]. This 8500 was the last "true Poulan" pro saw before Electrolux took over in '86. Poulan built a beautiful saw here, 85cc ,well balanced, fast and light. It competed with the Stihl 064 which came out in '86.
If any of you guys have never run a 8500, then you missed out experiencing a great saw. I don't have any pictures at the moment but maybe Kevin or someone can post some.

Thanks for that Kevin, but I have to admit poor Homelite Jim's videos were pretty painful to watch.
If I get my brothers 8500 I'll post some pics and maybe a video or two. Along with that 8500 comes a Wolf tune pipe, some strong porting and a WB carb.
The saw has barely a scratch on it and I fondly remember how smooth and quick that thing cut even before he modded it .Plus it doesn't have that ugly full wrap handle either.
Like alot of guys I know who had said, you're not a Poulan man until you own a 8500.

I forgot I had this pic of a 8500 from a 1985 Poulan ad.

Yeah it was Willard.
I was looking for the pic of a 8500 with the K&N filter set up I had seen before. So I settled for those video's when I gave up.

Hi,
Just pick up a Poulan, going by the pics on here is either a 3500 or 3600.
its a Type i Serial Number 530-029086
then this is below 95093h
Anyone know which one it is????
Its a brilliant saw, i fitted a clutch cover with a chain brake handle, but after 3 hrs i'd melted the handle off!

First Poulan was a 2000. It is the first saw that I modified also. Removed the base gasket and used needle files on the ports to open them alittle. I put a new ring in it muffler modded it and that little sucker screamed pretty good. I still have it and it cracks me up evertime I fire it up.

My first saw was a micro super XXV deluxe 33cc 14". Bought new from Lowes in Richmond KY $136.39 Oct 1980. Still have it, runs like a top, put one carb kit in it since new and a few chains. It does not see as much service since I "spread it around" among the fleet.
2 years ago I moved and a year ago I got a wood stove at the new place and I dragged the old saw out... since then, saws have been showing up and most of them I have gotten to run and are functional.

I can across this picture .It's really my second Poulan whatever model it is ? 2 bucks at an auction with a new Stihl pico chain ,not bad .
I used this little rascal as my climber until I got the Stihl Ms 200T's and it didn't do bad at all .
Al that saw's a Poulan XX (20). Can't tell from the pic whether it's orange and Dayton or Wizard/Western Auto branded.............or red and Craftsman branded. I have a Craftsman 1.9, which is the same as a Poulan XX-D (20D). It was the first Poulan I owned. Ran and worked on many Poulan and Craftsman branded Micro series, XXV series, and 2500 series Poulans before that.
Now I have a mess of Poulans. Got that Craftsman 1.9, a Craftsman 2.1A branded 25DA (thanks Mark), a few S25-CVA's, two late production Poulan Pro S25AV's, a late electronic ign 306A, a Dayton branded 245SA, a Craftsman 2.0-14 branded 2000, a Craftsman 3.4 branded 3400 (that I'm rebuilding), a green 3400, and most recently a PP330....................plus some parts saws. More Poulans may be on the way to me shortly...
When I was given my Craftsman 1.9 (by a Homelite nut friend), I wanted nothing to do with Poulans......having worked on hundreds of 'lunchbox' weedwackers and blowers, and other Poulan models that I grew to despise. Friends on the net got me hooked on the old Poulans........and then the 'modern' ones such as my PP330. You guys that are responsible for my Poulan addiction know who you are! ;D

Aaron that was a great story. I did not know because of your vast knowlege on saws that you that you did not always collect Poulan saws.

I had a 3000 that was a decent saw for a weekend warrior like me. At least until it and a 12 drawer tool box disappeared during a move. >:(

Thanks Roger. I just seem to have a head for gathering/retaining 'useless' info. When I was in HS it was everything to do with motorcycles, old trucks and muscle cars. Later it was firearms and reloading. Can't remember 'important' stuff like my own name half the time however..... ???
I was into old Homelites long before the Poulans and the Macs because of my old rancher buddy. He's not on the net, and has been running a firewood business off and on since 1969 or so and only runs old Homelites. He's the guy that gave me that little XXD when it came to him in a batch of saws.
My experience working on Poulan's "not so great" machines (everybody has duds...) at Sears service soured me on the brand for quite a while. Heck, it took a while for me to even get into the Homelites as I wanted NOTHING to do with working on OPE after my time working at Sears. I had that XXD as my only Poulan for over a decade without getting another. Modified Mark, Mike the Mopar guy, and others helped me get over that hangup and get into the Poulans bigtime. It's their fault! ;D

I'll post up some pics in a bit. Much of my 'collection' consists of 'before' or 'works in progress' saws...
