The 2040 hasn't been a current model in close to a decade, as far as i know - and isn't what the ad states it is....

Nathaniel so what happens when someone wants warranty work done and they bought the saw elsewhere. Over here where I am If I took a saw to the local guy and i had bought it in town he would tell me to take it back there to get fixed

=Australia

In the USA as a dealer you are to work on all of that brand as part of the dealer agreement.

The subject chainsaw though recently bought was made 10 years ago. It could potentially present a obsolescence problem?

The warranty starts from the time the unit is registered not made.
I know a dealer with 4 year old MS280's on the shelf and they still have a full warranty.

It would have been a warranty job but he ended up taking it back home to return it. New saw that had sat around long enough for the fuel lines to deteriorate was to much for the owner to over look. I bought out the old inventory from a dolmar dealer that had  2004 to 2009 as the manufacture date on all of it. I sold it all last year with  the then current 2 year warranty.
