Title: 1950 wood shark not pumping oil
Post by: super44 on August 16, 2011, 01:50:01 pm
My 1950 wood shark has stopped pumping oil to the bar.  It has seen a fair amount of use but still runs good.  How durable are the pumps in these saws??

I've been replacing a bunch of these. Usually stuff gets under pump around crankshaft area and jams up nylon gear on pump itself and stops it which gets stripped out by the metal worm gear on the crankshaft turning. Look under the pump is the wire worm gear on the crankshaft. Then look at nylon gear on pump to see if any flat spots. If not,  clean all around and check feed tube for blockage.

1 Usually I find nylon gear wore out by being stripped.
2 nylon gear is being stopped by junk under pump.
3 blockage in tube going to outlet.

Very easy to check, fix and cheap to fix if new pump is needed.

Looks like I need to pull the clutch to get that done.  The throtle catch has not worked for years and the rewind is in need of a new spool so it looks like time for some TLC.

Flat spot on the gear!  Looks like I will need to put up with the high speed catch not catching as it looks to be in accessible.

I put the new pump in and it is not pumping oil.  Do these things need to be primed some how?

Grumpy in Wisconsin!

I've made a habit of priming the pumps before I put one on any make of saw. Maybe I am just getting lucky.

Did you check that your worm gear was good and turning the plastic gear on pump? Did you check that the bar oiler area was clear from there to the tube going to pump? Blowing out from bar area to where the oiler mounts to tube, making sure it was clear.

The bar is not on the saw yet but all the passages are clear.  I do see a few bubble's coming from the oil port but no stream of oil.  How do I prime this pump?

Still grumpy in Wisconsin.

I cant remember on this one.  Make sure line going into tank is clear and filter on end is clean. I use a oil squirt bottle with trigger and fill the lines on both sides of pump and then shoot oil into pump while manually turning it.

I pulled the old pump apart and all it is is a shaft with a small flat spinning in a tube.  It must act almost like a slinger??

Still grumpy and now stumped in Wisconsin.
