Title: Got another metallic blue Poulan S25 coming
Post by: AmericanPsycho on December 16, 2014, 11:33:13 am
This one wears the Craftsman name. Doesn't appear to have a lot of paint loss. Has good compression. Needs routine maintenance and a good bath.

The blue ones are hard to come by. I can always part the saw out if I can't get it running.

She's out for delivery ;D Came from Earl's Saw Shop. The tracking page says the shipping weight is 22lbs. Wouldn't surprise me they add more weight into the computer for a label and pocket the extra money.

Since that's a 10-ish pound saw you may be right....

Thanks 8)

The piston and cylinder are perfect, and compression is good. The spark isn't the greatest but it's there. There was a lot of saw cake build up. It's going to need fuel lines, filters, and carb kit.
Title: Re: Scored a Metallic Blue S25 for $10.28 Saturday Night
Post by: AmericanPsycho on December 20, 2014, 01:42:49 pm
I checked the spark in low light and it's bluish white. I used my Maglite Solitaire to light up the inside of the cylinder and not a single hair scratch. Will most likely have to decarbonize the cylinder because there's quite a bit of carbon build up on the exhaust port. I'm positive she will run again.

You did well.  I like the unusual combination of tools on the counter with the saw;  Stanley socket set, parts scrubbing brush, spatula.............and 1911.8)

What's very interesting to me is the kill switch on that saw.  It's a 38cc/2.3ci variant (going by the recoil decal).......................and yet it has a sliding switch.  The sliding switch is the earlier style.  AFAIK we've always associated that switch style with the 34cc/2.1ci variants.  That's the first 2.3ci XXV series saw I've seen with the sliding switch.

Every 2.3ci XXV series saw I've seen has had the toggle switch (which is the later style kill switch on these saws).  There were some 2.1ci saws with the toggle switch as well.  I have a red Craftsman 2.1A with the toggle...

Thank you. Isn't the saw on the left a 1.9 AKA Poulan 20?

I live on my own so I can get away with bad house keeping. I still need to buy a couple of cans of PC duster and blow the saw cake out of it. I believe this saw to have a manual oiler only.

As far I know, all the saws in this series have those holes....................at least all the examples I own (and that's a few..................they multiply) have those holes.

Not limited editions.  Just was the color they used for a relatively short time frame in the 1970's before switching to red.

LOL.  I've seen plenty of blue ones.  There's almost always at least one on ebay.

  http://www.ebay.com/itm/CRAFTSMAN-2-3-CHAINSAW-VINTAGE-no-spark-/221638311505?pt=US_Chainsaws&hash=item339aac3e51

Pull your flywheel cover.  Look at the bottom of the case behind the edge of the flywheel.  You'll see the oil pump.  If it's auto and manual there will be a section on the left side of the pump with a cover held down by a couple screws.  That section has the auto oiler diaphragm.  If it does not have that section, then it's manual only.  In this pic the flywheel has been removed.  You should be able to see the oil pump peeking out behind your flywheel.  The flywheel is easy to remove also (and doing so makes replacing the fuel line much easier).

Thanks for the idea. I'll check when I go to remove more saw cake, already removed about a pound of it.

Apparently the color is turquoise but it looks blue to me. I see blue ones pop up 6 or so times a year but they're usually trashed like the one currently on Ebay. I spent 2 years waiting for one in good cosmetic shape to show up.

and thats all that matters.

I wanted a green poulan in the 415-505 series. There wasnt one made. So I made my own.

Thats all that matters IMO if WE the owners are happy with our stuff.

You're correct. Stihl does offer 1/4 chain but doesn't mention lengths. Maybe I'm better off putting a 3/8 sprocket on the saw which probably means I would need to buy another bar.

Very interesting.  That saw has the toggle kill switch.  The OP's saw is also a 2.3 but has the sliding switch.  Looks like I was wrong about the progression of Craftsman colors.  Blue/aqua must have come before the yellow Explorer saws.  I had assumed that the yellows were older than the blue/greens as the yellows often had RN bars.  Hmmm....

Kevin is that your saw?  I need to pick up a yellow 2.3 like that.  Odd that it doesn't have "Explorer" on the starter decal.....

As I suggested in my PM......I believe it's just a stuck gasket.  If you think something else is holding it up, post a pic of the carb area of the saw with the AF cover off.

According to Acres' website both the yellow and metallic blue models were introduced the same year.

On to the carb. I did get the carb off. I tried pulling off that gasket and it ripped. It's going to need to soak in carb cleaner for a while.

I've got a brown saw similar to these on eBay right now. It's an Allis Chalmers 75-A in pretty good cosmetic condition and really great operating condition. It's been bid up to about $175 ish with 5 days left. I sold a "green" one a couple days ago in good running order for $50.00 so the color DOES make a difference. I also sold another of these 75-A saws on eBay a week or so ago and someone hit the buy it now about 30 minutes after it posted. (that person is also bidding on the current listing)

It's not the color so much...........................as that it's an AC branded saw.  The tractor collectors go nuts some times.  Seen AC and Ford branded saws get bid up to crazy levels.  4-5x what the same model in Poulan green (or Craftsman red/grey/blue/yellow/black) would go for in like condition......

I seen the Allis Chalmers. The last time I checked the price was at $112.

Update:

Ordered in an Oregon 91VXL chain this morning. Now to order the sprocket and I can do the 3/8" conversion.
Title: Almost ready

Ordered in a 3/8" sprocket, cylinder gasket, and fuel tank gasket. All that's left is fuel line and fuel filter and then I can start the process of getting the S25DA running. Should have the little feller going by late Spring.

A couple years ago I sold my S25CVA and missed it ever since.  Luckily, I scored another off evilbay for 58 bux delivered with new bar and chain.

When you sold your last one I told you you'd miss it Carl.  Glad to see you got a nice one there.  Great price too.  My S25-CVA's are my favorite sub-41cc saws.

Looks like you got a rebuild to do on it before you get that far.

Tell me about it. I picked up every gasket I could find for the S25 series. The piston and cylinder bore weren't harmed by the carbon which is a good thing. The cylinder is coming off. I'm planning on a complete tear down and thorough cleaning.

Another update:

I'm sending the S25DA to a saw mechanic for a thorough going over. I live in an apartment and can't mess with liquids like gasoline.

Update:

The little Poulan is on it's way to the West Hill Saw House in Vermont. Will probably have the saw back by 06/10/15.

Apparently it's not legal to ship saws through the Post Office. The Post Office said they'll let it slide since I didn't know. The postal clerk might be in trouble for not asking. Don't know know if this is just a restriction set by my local Post Office but I'm going to play it safe and have Andrew ship the saw back through UPS or FedEx.

I've shipped dozens of saws through the post office.  The few times they've asked, I've told them I'm shipping old saw parts (rather than a complete saw).  If they ask..........tell them it has no oil or gas whatsoever in it.

That said, I don't use USPS for shipping complete saws anymore.  For the most part, I only use them for shipping parts that'll fit in the various flat rate priority mail boxes.

For saws and bars, I use FedEx now that I have an account with them.  Having an account drops the price of FedEx ground quite a bit.  For some stupid reason, their online 'create a shipment' utility doesn't have FedEx ground as an option (or I'm too dumb to figure out how to get it to work right).  I can only get it to select one of the more expensive (and faster) shipping options online.

When I walk into the FedEx shipping store, I'm able to send by FedEx ground however.  Recently sent an 18 pound box (with a Jonsered 630 powerhead inside) from Ca to VT for less than $31.  It arrived in a week (and they had stated 5 business days......so that fits).  If I'd shipped USPS standard post, it'd have cost $36.83 (plus tax I think) with 8 days for estimated delivery time...

I also shipped a 36" bar from Ca to Ohio for something like $21 via FedEx ground and it got there in a week.  That was before I had an account with them, so my price now would be less.  I shipped a much lighter 30" bar (in lighter/less bulky packaging) about the same distance a year or two ago through USPS (parcel post) and it cost close to $30 and took over two weeks to get there..........

I know this is BS because I list CHAINSAW right on the customs forms for USPS.

I just shipped a 025 USPS and received a 3.0 USPS too.

Your suppose to empty all the gas and bar oil out of them and air dry till no smell.
Title: Re: Scored a Metallic Blue S25 for $10.28 Saturday Night
Post by: Eccentric on May 13, 2015, 03:00:30 pm
Yep.  I drain the tanks, swab out the fuel tank with a shop rag (and blot dry the fuel filter felt), blow the fuel tank out, and then let it sit for a day or more with the cap off to air out before packing up the saw.

I also 'double bag' the saws in two garbage bags (one inside the other, and taped shut after forcing all the air out) to contain any smells.  I make sure that the seams on the box are taped to lessen the chance of any smells getting out and spooking the shipping people too.  I'd bet that the reason they returned your saw (and told you it's "illegal" to ship a saw) was their concerns about oil and gas.......

The lady told me nothing with an engine gets shipped because of fluid residue. I'm just reporting what I'm told. I mean no disrespect and I'm not trying to argue.

Got it on Ebay for $31 shipped. It's the CVA version. Starts on a prime so it shouldn't take too much work to make a runner out of it. Does need the muffler, bar, and chain replaced.

The S25 CVA arrived today. Just needs carb kit, fuel line, fuel filter, and air filter, and it should be good to go. Virtually zero saw cake. Excellent spark, and compression. No piston or cylinder damage.

Don't know yet. It fires on a prime. Still need to buy an Oregon 91 VXL chain and change the sprocket out before putting it in wood.

Blue of course. Being on eBay, I probably paid a little more than what the saw is worth but it's in really nice cosmetic shape. Should only need the basics which I'm more than capable of.

Dang thats alot of $ for a scored no spark saw  JMO.  Should have been runner for the kind of $$$ you spent.

I'd seed it back or ask for partial refund IF it was stated and sold as runner.
