Title: poor acceleration on one yr old 362
Post by: schreib on January 16, 2015, 04:36:49 pm
Hello folks,  I'm a newbie here, be gentle.
I just bought a used MS 362 from a pro arborist, said he used it one year.   Paid $400, he says it "rips", seemed very honest.  However, when I ran it(in front of him) and pulled the gas trigger(quickly) it bogged, totally died twice.   I let it warm up(30°F outside today in Minnesota) and it still bogged a bit even when completely warm, but it did accelerate in less than a couple seconds to full speed.   Plug looks great, light tan, not wet.  The air filter was pretty dirty but I removed the top cover and removed it also, same result.  I pulled the cold weather window off and set it aside and same result.  He claims it has a been a few months since he used it, August, but it has always run great.  I could not get an understanding from him exactly if what I demonstrated ever happened to him. . . I bought it anyway, for $50 less than we discussed; with the idea, it's probably OK, just needs some minor work.

Am I right?  I WANT to be right! ha!

Here are my first thoughts, let me know what I missed and re-order my priorities please. . . in order:

clean air filter is a no brainer, new plug cause their cheap, then:
1) dump the gas, premium fuel(what he says he always uses) and try again.
2)if no joy on 1) pull the carb and soak in carb cleaning solvent, does not make sense to rebuild if only one year old.
3) start worrying . . .

One more thing:   When I ran it up to speed I didn't see much oil at ALL flinging off into the snow bank until it got warmer.  Any reliable ways to check oil lube function?

Thanks!

In the chainsaw world, you need to step back and soak in some reality...
One can have a fine running 6 month old saw, and it has 6 month old fuel in it, it will run like chit, and just dumping said fuel won't cure the problem of a clogged carb, clogged by the old varnished fuel...
But you will need to go through the carb, but you need to do it correctly....

In the cold weather, last summer's bar oil is going to be too thick. Put some kerosene or 10W30 in the bar oil tank?

The 30w bar oil from Wally World thinned with kerosene works well.  Five/six parts oil to one part kero.  A little goes a long way.

Carb. have limiters?  If so, ditch 'em.  Low needs turned out another half turn.

NOTE to all:  I mis-typed the Subject, now it is changed -- poor ACCELERATION(NOT access)

Thanks to you all.  I will:
1) dump the gas, replace my NEW mix, retry.
2) if no effect, I will crank out Low speed screw 1/2 turn and check for effect.  If none, back it goes
3) pull the carb and "do it right"

This should get me closer, thanks again!

I will wait on the oil to see if its use keeps up with gas usage . . .
