Title: Banana tip bar
Post by: Cut4fun . on February 13, 2015, 03:09:18 pm
Trying to dig up info for the guy with 16"  44196 poulan bar.

Looks like a k041 mount to me but could be wrong and 196 mount going by the part number?

Looks like full 3/8 050 and wondering about the drive link count?

I'm just WAGing any real info?

Closest I've been able to find to that part # was a 44195 16" A041 mount 3/8-LP sprocket nose bar in a Micro XXV series IPL.

My Poulan 3400 had a bar like that when I got it. I do know that the chain would not fit a better 16" bar I put on it by one DL.

K041 and A041 both have a 5/16" stud slot slot, as does the D176 and D276.

D196/D096/UXL/TXL has a 3/8" slot.

The A064 Frontier mount (like on the little bastard Skil/etc tophandles) and A061 (little Homelite XL/XL2/Super2/etc) have 6.4mm slots.

IF YOU FOLLOW THE REST OF THE POSTS IN THIS THREAD, YOU WILL FIND THAT THESE LINKS (AUS) IN THIS POST ARE NOT CORRECT. THE LISTED DIMENSIONS ARE NOT TO BE RELIED UPON!  READ ON FOR THE GENUINE OREGON CATALOG REFERENCES (660)

A041, K041, A061 = 1/4"
http://www.oregonchain.com.au/a061.html

A064 = 1/4"
http://www.oregonchain.com.au/a064.html

D196 = 8mm or .315"
http://www.oregonchain.com.au/d196.html

D176 & D276 = 8mm or .315"
http://www.oregonchain.com.au/d176.html

3/8" = .375" = 9.25mm
1/4" = .250" = 6.4mm

I have a suspicion that these charts are not exactly accurate? That these dimensions are nominal and in real life out in the woods, you'll find Them a little different from these links? That these bar types were consolidated to save on inventory space and cost?

Sorry Jim.  That Oregon stuff there is wrong.  The A041/K041 and A064 pages you linked to both show a pic of an A061 mount bar (in error).

The D196 page you linked to shows a pic of a D176 mount (in error).  The A061 is very distinctive.  1/4" open ended slot, with a larger square section in the front for the square tensioner stud on those saws.

The D176 mount page you linked to shows the correct mount.

This is the A061 mount:

Look at the 2015 Oregon catalog.  Start at page 138, and go through 144.  The correct mounts are there.  I also have many many bars in the A041, D176, A061, and D196 mounts (and a couple K041's and A064's).

http://content.yudu.com/web/y5b2/0A1k7eb/OregonBigCat2015/flash/resources/1.htm?refUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.oregonproducts.com%2Fpro%2Fpro_home.htm

Page 138 of the Oregon catalog shows the A041, A061, and A064.

Page 140 has the K041.

Page 143 has the D096 (basically the same as the D196) and D176.

Page 144 has the D196 and the A041/A074/A095 specialty 'multi fit' mount used with their Sculptor carving bars.

It is ponderous.

I've seen more than a few sites with bar info that's incorrect.  Looks like someone did a cut and paste thing (poorly) a while back, and the resulting flawed documents were then reused on other sites without anyone noticing the errors.

A side question here fellows.  I've a 16" banana that either came with a 452vl or a 3400.  Bars were off so can't say for sure what was wearing what.

Upon inspection the bar is wearing a 3/8, 0.050 Oregon76 (?) chain.  There is a ghost image of that number on the drivers and the depth gauge has a laid back profile.  It looks different as the cutters are certainly smaller than an LGX and the 452 is happy pulling that 76.

From what I gather this is long obsolete.  Did Oregon Replace this particular chain with anything in their current line?  I don't know if I want to go full comp. LG/PX as the time is near to replace this one.

I am naive with respect to the lp chains.

No intent to hijack here.  Always curious.

Thanks guys,

Cory

Oregon 76 is sadly discontinued.  There isn't really any direct replacement.  It is a regular 3/8 pitch (not LP) chain, with full sized drivers and tie straps.  The cutters are lower profile than regular 3/8 pitch, but not as small as LP cutters.  Closer to .325 pitch cutters in height (and a 3/16" file is the correct file for them, as it is with most .325 pitch chain).  I like Oregon 76 on 40-50cc class saws for which there isn't an easy way to run LP (such as my Homelite Super E-Z AOW).  There was both regular and 'safety' versions of 76.  The 'safety' version has the 'shark fins' that we see on many other Oregon consumer/safety chains.  There are loops of 76 (both regular and safety) on ebay from time to time if you want to just get another loop of it for your saw.

Banana bars were indeed OEM on many Echos (and Poulans).  I've seen NOS Echo branded Oregon laminate and 3 rivet replaceable tip bars wearing the 'guard tip' (which was the 'banana' version of their 3 rivet replaceable tip).  Your 3400 and 452 both come from the era where those two manufacturers were installing 'banana' bars (and both saws use the same mount).

Oregon 76 was a good match for your 452.  It can run 3/8 pitch chain, but would probably be happier with .325 pitch come chain replacement time.  That would of course require a sprocket and bar change at the same time.  If you don't get too aggressive with the raker hight, it'll be fine with Oregon 72LGX or 72LPX.  Don't think you need to go with skip on a 16" bar with that saw.  The 3400 will run a 16" bar with 72LGX or 72LPX without breaking a sweat.

There is a thread on the oregon 76 chain in the bar chain area here. I had a lot of NOS 76 chain and stihl chain in same type stuff.  I tried the 76 on a new 550 with 20".   Still wasnt happy. Just to long of bar for 50cc.

IIRC there was also McCulloch branded Oregon 76 for a time as well.  Do you still have that NOS 76 chain Kevin?

Nope it was all sold for the chassis for race chains.  72 cutters used on 76 chassis.

You can still get the SL if you search real close.  I passed on a roll of LG last year year before. Dont know if they still got it or not.

I don't want SL, as I'm not breaking down chains to make race chain....................and I don't want to bother with grinding off a buncha shark fins.  Will do so if/when I can't find any more 76LG (or the Stihl version).  Wish the racers would just gobble up the SL and leave the 76LG alone.....:D

Interesting, I just picked up a nice 2300AV with the "banana tip" 16" bar, but it's running an Oregon #91  3/8 .050 56DL chain.

Few 3/8LP I had.   10" to 16" I think
