Title: John Deere j3816 problems...
Post by: pauldeere on March 03, 2015, 07:05:17 pm
Picked up a John deere j3816 chain saw. I know it's definately not the top of the line saw, and it is what it is. The saw was used very little and is in excellent cond. The saw has ben setting in it's case for a number of years with no fuel in the tank. With fresh fuel and a little Sea Foam a new plug the saw fired up however dosent seem to run as it should. Trying to adjust the carb. Could some one explain the correct direction to turn the Low and High jets to get the saw to run as it should....

I would rebuild the carb first. Then worry about the adjustments. The diaphragms in the carb are probably dried out and fatigued. Just my .02. Turn the screws in to lean out the mixture and turn the screws out to richen the mixture. Can be more help if you tell us how it is running. Hesitation of idle. Won't idle, etc. Would start with 1 turn out on both screws for a lightly seated postion.

Thanks for the quick reply. The saw runs decent as it is, idles good, accelerates good. Notice that there is very limited adjustment on the L and H screws on the carb. The only problem is that it is hard to start.  And the chain oiler put's entirely to much oil on the chain, assuming there is no adjustment for this.........Thanks again.

Not familiar with that particular saw. But would have to think there are limiter caps on the H and L speed screws.

Looking at this John Deere IPL  http://www.circletractor.com/OemParts#%2fJohn_Deere%2fJ3816_Chain_Saw_-PC9170%2fCARBURETOR%2cAIR_FILTER%3a_J3816%2f91700002%2f9170D031C0102000003

appears to show the plastic type stops sticking out to limit movement. Trim them down.
