Title: cylinder fixes stripped out muffler threads ?
Post by: Cut4fun . on March 16, 2015, 02:55:50 pm
cylinder fixes stripped out muffler threads.

What are some of the fixes people have used in pasted on 350 cylinders when the bolt wallows out from being run loose for a period of time?

I cant remember all the fixes I have read in the past.  I think there was even something OEM repair kit deal too.

Me right now am rednecking this 350 as cheaply as possible for owner as thats what it wants.  One side was missing muffler bolt and stripped out.

I remember  @mweba showing the 346 muffler bracket being cut and used on 350 to help out after repairing.

If they are not terrible you can heli-coil them or use a thread-sert. You can also step up the bolts to a M6 instead of the M5. If they are too bad for a thread-sert and the larger bolt then they can be welded in. I've welded probably 5 350 cylinders now.

Yes, a 346 muffler bracket with the one side that should bolt to the case front cut off works well to keep them on. Also, I've just used high temp RTV on the bolt threads and gasket surface and that keeps them from rattling out.

This one was beyond all of that IMO without welding back up.  I tried a redneck methond that ended up in failure. I called him and got approval to get a used c+p.

The p+c was scored up and I had already cleaned up to be used. Was usable IMO and used worst before.
Just couldnt get passed that muffler hole.

Kev, happy to weld and re-tap for you. Not sure if that's worthwhile with postage..

Not worth it IMO at this point. Already ordered a 2150 used topend.  $54 for used p+c, tax, ship about $68 to my door.  Wish he would have went this route from get go. But tried to save him money.
Now I just hope the used one is good on all the threads.

Thanks though.

I have a flat top 350/353 piston if you need it. New, never used. I used it in mock up doing my 350 but had a 2nd set that I used. Don't have rings or wrist pin but if you need piston let me know. I used just blue loctite on the muffler bolts on mine and haven't had them loosen up at all.
