Title: Cooking Oil as Bar Oil
Post by: Giles on March 18, 2015, 11:45:28 pm
Didn't know where to post this---
Friend gave me 3 gallon of Wesson Canola Cooking Oil. It looks new but he said it was used and filtered.
I know some of you have suggested using this filtered oil as BAR OIL in chainsaws.
Just wondering if you mix it with bar oil or use it exclusively?

I use canola oil mixed with regular bar oil as a winter mix. seems to work ok. I typically use a 50/50 mix but that's probly too much canola. that's just where I started and haven't taken the time to experiment.
i'd be real careful regarding the filteredness of the oil.

10% gear oil will give the oil very good anti-fling properties
10% diesel or kerosene will give it a bit of bar and chain cleaning properties

It is used straight up for cutting ice blocks or quartering game, of course it doesn't stick well but there is a lot of lube anyway.

I've been running veggie oil/whatever is cheapest at the grocery store for 2 yrs. I've had no issues.
