Title: Stihl 460 jug
Post by: jmester on July 26, 2015, 08:37:53 pm
Cleaned up the transfer and a piece of the coat has flaked off. Thinking it is junk. But wanted to see what you guys thought first.

That is the exhaust side.

That sucks.  >:( Lot of hours on the cylinder? Looks like it just came off on its own as it's not touching the exhaust port. Suppose you could try it if you have a piston you don't care about for it. I don't have a lot of experience in this area but I think it would be problematic.

I don't think it had a bunch of hours. Buddy of mine pulled it from a dumpster for me.

It probably won't last if it flaked that easy. Did you use acid on it?

No acid. I don't care for it much. Used 240 grit and some scotch brite pads. Maybe I just got to rough with it. Got a used p and c coming from chainsawr.

Acid will sometimes do that. I had a 460 cylinder that I used acid on and it popped off like that.

Must have popped off a couple of hours later because it was not like that when I set it on the bench. Oh well.

I've had the worst luck saving 460 jugs. I've thought of trying to have 10 jugs relined if they'd give a price break on the $200 each. Might be worth it on some 2100 or something older that there's not many of.

$200 each and oe pistons at $45 or so dollars is still cheaper than buying a new oe p and c kit.  But like you said there are enough good used 460 part saws out there.

You might be surprised. If you could feather out the chip with craytex or something the rings might span the gap and you might never have problems with it .--32 to 1 oil mix, elixor of champions . ;)

Wonder if there is a price break? If there is I would save some jugs to have relined. If a few of us got together I would think we could have quite a few to send out

I will have to look into craytex. Have heard a few talk about but never looked it up.

I think the p/c kit is about that price now from some dealers. I haven't checked lately on the cost of one.

If they're $200  I wouldn't consider saving one unless it was a D chamber with short blowdown

Is that a Mahle or Industria Brasil jug? I've seen a number of the Brazilian jugs with pitting in the plating...

The mahle are the ones I've had problems cleaning up. The newer KS have good plating.

Is KS still German made?

I think KS has a plant in PA or did.
