Title: MS360 Pro wont start
Post by: ears54 on August 14, 2015, 12:44:41 pm
And so it begins.
I was given an MS360 Pro. It seemed to run OK initially but has become impossible to start. It ran fine yesterday morning for a short time, say 30min. It was hard to start after a short break but I finally got it going. After another short break it would not start at all and that is where I am now.

I have run thru the normal troubleshooting steps:
•   Fuel (recently replaced fuel tube and filter)
•   Carburetor
•   Spark Arrestor
•   Plug

I even checked the mag to be sure it was clean and I set clearance at .002, which is where it was when I disassembled. I am getting spark, but it doesn’t seem to be very strong. When trying to start it doesn't sound like it is getting fire, but it is difficult to otell for sure. I tried to get a compression reading but I’m not 100% confident in my reading, 55-65 psi. No idea what the compression is supposed to be. And lastly, when I had the cover off the muffler to check the arrestor screen I could see vertical striations on the piston :(.

I am thinking of replacing the coil assembly, but the marks on the piston have me a bit worried, even though when the saw did run it seemed to run fairly strong.

I am looking for any suggestions or recommendations.

Thanks

I hate to bear bad news, but so far yer battin 0, should be .010 on the coil and the comp should be 3 times that number and striations on the piston sounds bad.

Pull the muffler off and visually inspect the piston/cylinder

Looks Like time for a rebuild?

You guys are just full of good news.  ;D

Nothing I wasn't really expecting, though. Just had to put it out there. You know, hope beyond hope.

So its a minimum top end rebuild. Any particular cylinder/piston brand I should stay away from? Any parts shop you would recommend for good service and reasonable pricing?

Thanks to all for your feedback. And have a great day!

See if the cylinder can be cleaned up. Also figure out WHY it is fried first. Then move on.

I had good luck with meteor piston kit in the 036 cylinder I cleaned up. http://northwoodsaw.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=644

There is members here that sale this kit too in the where to buy online area if you check around.

I was given an ms360 that was seized up and i cleaned up the cyl. and rebuilt it with a meteor piston, found the air leaks that caused the problem and now it has 160 lbs comp and is a strong runner.

For a top end replacement you need a couple tools as well if you don't already have them. A T27 with a long shaft and a ring compression kit.

Here http://www.hlsproparts.com/Piston-ring-compressor-tools-kit-p/s97419.htm

and

Here http://www.hlsproparts.com/Wiha-chainsaw-T-wrench-T27-x-200mm-p/wt36432.htm

or to cover most bases here http://www.hlsproparts.com/Complete-Set-of-Wiha-Chain-Saw-Tools-p/wtk.htm

I am in no way encouraging you to purchase these items from this website, they are available from many different vendors. I am just noting they are popular options for repairing saws.

If you so purchase anything from HLsupply, remember they give you 10% off for being a member here and using the code word in their where to buy online thread below.
