Title: Stihl 180 c be
Post by: Cut4fun . on October 19, 2015, 03:08:53 pm
Stihl 180   can the regular clutch cover be used to replace the tool less covers?

Took a like new stihl 180c with case and extra chain on trade.   Didnt really need or want but helping out a younger guy from work. Know how it is.
Plus I was thinking of my dad with the easy start deal. Even though I dont like that tool less tensioner deal.

IMO best easy start system out there is on stihl. I had one here on a 250. Me and Jim checked it out and they are just plain slick for older or people with shoulder and or  hand injures or problems.

You can pull rope 1" at a time till it winds it up then it takes off on its own if need be.

If dad dont end up with it. 180 or 3900 will get sold.  Heck might use for myself as I get older.  ;D

As it came in.  The guy said they had 200 trees to work on and the 180 wasnt getting it done.  :D  His buddy was using a PP330 I had sold him yeas ago.

So does a normal clutch cover work on these?

Does any bigger saws fit this dang stihl woodsman case?

Pretty sure I will be cleaning this up and giving to dad for Christmas.

Just in case he didnt want the case I wanted to know what else it fits. As I know he feels about cases the way I do. Heck the poulan 2000 original case is still here for that saw I gave him to use as he dont do cases.

Stihl Woodsman Chainsaw Carrying Case   Fits MS 170 to MS 460 with 20” bar. (Excludes MS 441 and wrap-handle saws.) Replacement parts available.  This was good to know and found on stihl website.

Now this part is just stupid. Distributor Suggested Retail Price DSRP:  $49.95 Really. Free maybe with saw.   https://shearerequipmentmansfield.stihldealer.net/products/chain-saws/accessories/cases-and-bar-scabbards/cscarry/?_ga=1.260414667.793714064.1420052069

So still need clutch cover swap info if it will work or not. Tensioner deal may be deal breaker too.

Will the 170 180 saws have enough balls to pull the PS PS3 chains?
Title: Re: Stihl 180 c be
Post by: 660magnum on October 21, 2015, 03:10:37 pm
The 180 and 180C have different crankcase part #'s

However, this could be because the studs are different?

You will need two bar studs for a 180

The complete tensioner assembly which is the same as the 250?

And the chain cover which is also the same as a 250?

Two bar nuts

PS3 is in the catalog for a 180 with a 12, 14, & 16 .050 bar, but the bar that came on some 180's was only .043 gauge.

That would be neat to have a 180 with a 14" Bar and a 50DL PS chain.
Title: Re: Stihl 180 c be
Post by: Cut4fun . on October 21, 2015, 06:53:42 pm
Yep 16" 043 55DL and the guy was running 050 56DL on it. No biggie on DL but thinking he must have wore bar just enough to work. I just test ran it with it on there and it did work.

Going to ask dad if he would prefer a 12" or 14" bar and will use 050 chain.

Took pics of the tool-less clutch cover and tensioner set up. Better then poulans version, but I still dont care for it.

Little lean for my klotz 32:1 mix but dad will run dino 40 or 50:1 so hopefully good then.  What is the max WOT rpm's of these things?

I did remove spark screen.

I will say this. This thing will eat that new echo 310 I had here.

Going to sell or trade off that new stihl woodsman chainsaw case that came with this and the 16" 043 3/8LP 55DL bar.

The case fits 170 - 460 with 20" bar.

Anyone have a usable 12" LP 050 they want to trade for the 043 16" ? Just idea running through my head to try.

Tool less tensioner.

I ordered bar 3005 000 4809 .   Today I received a bar but not that number, it is 3005 003 6309 .

Thing I noticed is it dont have any bar oiler holes in it like the 30050004809 bar. Also the tail mount is a little narrower on the 30050036309.

I still think it will work but need to do some drilling now.

What was the bar for being they are both 3/8LP picco 050 50DL.  Stihl bar made in Sweden

3005 003 6309

The 30050036309 is not in the current catalog.

Yep older stihl bar style. But wonder what they fit?

I think if I drill oiler holes it will work, even though mount is a tad narrower.

Being tail mount was little narrower. I went little closer to rails when drilling the oiler holes. Tested fitted and oiles great.

One thing I noticed when putting the little bolt in the too-less tensioner deal through the bar to hold it all together. The bar tensioner holes were a little bigger on this older bar. The head on bolt pulled right through while tightening.  I thought WTH!   :D
I put a small flat washer on it to fix this and all is well.

Then I would like a hook up fix.  Let me know what I own you kind Sir.

I am betting the 12" being older dont have the oiler holes in bar and the bar tensioner holes to big by just a tad. But I figured that all out on the 14" I used for dad.

PM on its way.

Already for Christmas with older style 14" modded mount area to work with 050 on this saw.

Shep is hooking me up with a older stihl 12" 050 that I will mod the mount to use on this saw too.

If anyone wants a deal on a 16" 043 bar that come off of it with a pretty worn 55DL PM chain just let me know or I will just hang up till someone needs one local.

Did buy the new updated stihl bar cover. Hate the old scabbards by stihl.

Just read a good thread on converting that quick tensioner cover over to old school cover with in crankcase tensioner.

Saving info.

Filler plate replaced with part 1123 664 2205

T27 filler screw replaced with 1123 664 2400

Quick chain adjust cover replaced with 1123 648 0405

Add the bar adjust from front and done with two new bar nuts.

Saving info while fresh in my mind.

Dad said he had issues with the 180 trying to clear shooting lanes and putting up a stand yesterday. Had to get his battery pole saw out to do the work.

Think he said would start and not stay running. Sometimes he thought it had a run on type of higher rpm.

Otherwise worked great all year till yesterday.

Wish he wasnt over 3hrs away.

So far my 180CBE has run perfectly as it came from the factory. It hasn't crossed my mind to change anything about it. I.ve touched up the chain three times. I did have a problem with the choke lever mechanism all came apart. No big deal I new what had happened when it wouldn't shut off one day.

Dads saws back with me. Left the yellow 152 to replace the 3300 he bought new in 93. The 2000 I bought in 94 replaced the minimac he bought in 79. The 180 easy start replaced those 2.
But the 180 he said started acting wonky. When I was down there it wouldnt even fire off.
Between processing a deer today I took a quick look. IMO just time for a carb. Will run long as I squirt mix in it. I wont waste time rebuilding as these are to cheap new.
The other 3 are just getting cleaned someday and going on the shelf.

I seen that Nate had said that is what he does. Said some mods inside area to do.

I was curious after buying another crosscut and setting inside. I opened the carb for a look see. Odd the fuel filter looks good but the inside of carb and screen was full of junk. Pump side dia seemed good, check side little stiff.

Well carb kit arrived yesterday. So after cleaning oem carb threw it in today. Good to go.

Carb I ordered not here yet so it will just be a stand by now.

Opened the fuel filter dang thing still like new inside too. I found where I had took this on trade 3 years ago and guy had it 1 year before that. So not bad.

Stihl 180 with easy start in plus one that isnt.

11251957200 pawl regular

11231957200  pawl easy start

I just tried something out of curiosity. Regular 180 recoil put on the easy start 180. Pull over.

It works. Never knew that on these. Least that is a plus.
