Husky 44 has white top with rancher across it on sides. Tell me about them.  40 something cc?

Good saw or bad stay away from?   Clamshell or bolt on cylinder etc?

I'll start searching for answers too.

Back to my search on 44. Looks to be made with bolt on cyl and vertical split crankcase  8).  So was it a good dependable small saw?

Alot of 44's still running around here. The pro version, 444 was a real hotrod in its day.

Great little saws.  Very dependable.  1978 is the one to stay away from.  No coils, no coils!  This was only year it had a blue coil.  The later models don't interchange to the best of my knowledge. I've got 8 6-white top 2 grey top and a 444 and lots of parts for this model.  Saw cuts above it's size IMO.  The best running one I had I got @ a thrift store $10.  Probably the worst looking saw I ever bought.  Looked like it had been in the yard for 10 yrs.  Got home put mix in it 3 pulls and it was walking the dog.  Pulls a 18" .325 with pretty good authority.

This local guy has a runner for $70. I described it in the OP. 

What does the metal tag on these look like so I can decode the date?  Guess I could ask him if I could pull recoil to see color of coil.

Silver tag should read something like: 3441 printed 8XXXXX embossed.   It reads like most Husky's the first embossed letter is YM, then ww of production.  Silver tags are pre 1987.  $70 is not bad.  In that condition usually bring $125 or better on Ebay.

Thought I try a reply prior to new post.    What is ban about the blue coil,  my dads saw is a blue coil, need to check that tag and see if it's a 1978.   Still runs good, but I need to do some general maintenance on it.

You can usually find the numbers on the face of the blue limited coil that tell you what the limiting rpm is?

They will typically read 13000, 13500, or 14000 rpm.

It would be unusual to see this kind of number on a black coil.

There are some problems with this chain saw after many years in use, most common might be airy sealings, airy gas rod in carburetor, cylinder and piston run out and electronic. Usually people used it for heavy work too because it was very light for that time. Check out for cylinder run out (shadows on the cylinder wall)
because it's the most expensive part to change.

Alright,  I was unable to find any numbers on the coil, but the saw numbers on the tag are 3441 "embossed 004187"  Not sure what year this saw is.
No chain break on it now, dad can't remember if he bought it that way or not.

Blue spark coils run OK as long as the engine is running below the coil's limiting RPM which may be 13,000 or more.

have a leaking lubricating system, need to tear into it.  Clutch off, no I'm looking at a three bolt plate that wont seem to come off.  Looks like the crank has a washer that fits into it and also wont come off.  I'm stumped, the IPL isn't to clear,  should I post some pics to help slove the problem?
