If you were to walk into a dealer and these two saws were sitting on a shelf....which one would you walk out with and why?

I don't own either but would say the 2166 as it is cheaper and if I remember right you can pull the transfer covers off and do some grinding on the inside of the cover and have a 2172.

If you are not into modding saws then I would saw the 2172 as there are more of them out there for parts down the road and a better resale value down the road.
I would buy the one you feel most comfortable with.

Only thing I know of different is the transfer covers on the 2166. Grind that away they are a 2172. Same cc saw.
I've seen 2166 new as cheap as $600. Most up to $699. Little over a $100 saved to $200 depending on the deal. That was with 20" b+c

Thanks.....I have seen the specs showing both saws being pretty much identical.
It's far too confusing to see the same 'motor' being made different by adding a bit of material around the transport! Really, why bother?

Manufacturing ease is my guess. Why have another whole cylinder assembly and piston when you can have them both the same. Probably got a break from Mahle on them since more quantity. The air filters are different on the 365 and 372 so I can see a harder choice for them.

Yes, it is a smaller package, less horsepower....but I already have a 2186 and a ported 2095.

2258 is a fine little saw. I had a 555 which is the husky version. Did fine with 20" of 3/8" chain in hardwoods.

As far as I know, there are no differences apart from the limiters in the transfer covers of the 2166. They really made it too easy to upgrade the cheaper saw this time, and gain quite a bit of power.
The same is of course the case with the Husky 365XT vs. the 372xpXT.

The HD filters on the 372 mainly is a US thing, and not universal. I would take a "low top" any day over here, but cutting conditions vary.
They soon discovered that the difference in the transfer covers were too easy to fix, so the price of the 365XT/2166 went up after a (short) while - but there still is a difference. If it is worth the difference to not have to fix the transfers is up to the costumer. The 365XT/2166 is the only saw model I know of that is this easy to upgrade though.

The Husky 261 with its dished piston (vs the 262XP with the flat top piston) was/is also easy to upgrade. It does also have a different clutch and sometimes a different carb (depending on the year of manufacture)......................but the piston change is where the lion's share of the difference lies.

Two saws... had to pick one... one a 2166 and the other a 2172? Me? I would take the 2172 after I convinced the store guy its the same as a 2166 other than a couple of fins and its only worth another 100 bucks because of the decal's... Why spend the extra 100? Because my time is worth money and if and when it comes to resale I'll get some of that difference back. That plus my time makes it a better deal to just go for the 2172... :) They are good saws. Wish that same guy had a 2171 though, and then it would be a "no brainer"... or if it was a 2165 for less than the 2166 I would take the fresh 2165 and send the top end to Bob, because it need to be appreciated; and make another "cyclops".. ;D
