how do you guys free up stuck rings. after jabbing small screwdriver into my thumb I would like to know a better way. no rust just bad gas.
-
Ultimately I have always replaced a stuck ring before I declared the problem solved.
I don't hold the piston in my hand.
-
yes you know best but this thing looks so new i want to try it and see. I have a vise on my bench if I had used it would not have hole in thumb.
-
@Al Smith is good with this 8). He has saved 1 or 2 for me now that I had given up on.
I was ready to break things. ;D
-
I put it in vise and and broke ring about the third time I tapped it. cleaned it up put ring off parts motor on it. not a good thing to do but i wont be able to rest till i hear it run.
-
The ones I gave up on I couldnt even get ring to budge in vise tapping.
-
I think Al uses Kroil to help him free up rings and heat.

Kroil is some very impressive stuff.

even after i broke ring out that crud was hard to scrape out of ring grove. got to put it back together before i forget where all the bolts go. when i was on steam turbine repair crew we used lots of kroil. i often forget about it on less than 40 pound bolts.
-
I always used a piece of the broken ring to clean the groove out.

That's the usual story with a stuck ring situation.

got him running . way to much time in a poulan pro blower but this time of year they sell. broke my own rule worked on it without checking compression till bad case of stubborn set in.

I use the broken ring. Plus I use emery clothe and have a tiny set of files for when one has been smeared tight in groove.
