Title: 670 carburetor substitute?
Post by: snowsalot on March 02, 2016, 10:36:44 pm
I have 670 super, the carburetor screws will not stay on settings. The carburetor is no longer available so I am wondering what my options might be. Is there a possible substitute that would work? Is it possible to install another cylinder and carb type such as of a husky? Any opinions I love my 670 just don't like adjusting carb screws every 1/2 hour

I dont know the saw carb at all on these?  @Spike60

This Jonsered 670 IPL shows a HS 230 carb.  http://www.jonsered.com/ddoc/JONI/JONI1994_AAaa/JONI1994_AAaa_I9400009_.pdf

Will a HS 234 or HS 260 from a 268 272 saws work?

230 draws impulse top of carb.  234 and 260 draws through intake block.  Should be able to use 272 intake block and 234/260 IIRC.  I'll look for another alternative Have some Dolmar HS carbs w/top of carb impulse.  Will look tomorrow.

Dolmar carbs didn't have impulse port on top.  Wiill look in Husky carb drawer.

I have been roaming around on the Internet and have come up with the idea that if I get a carburetor from a husky 266(they are easy to get )and switch the top plate with my carburetor and plug the cylinder impulse port on the husky carb it might work. Pure conjecture on my part as I don't have the husky carb in my hand. Any thoughts?

Do the adjusting screws have springs under them?   Also the carbs that come on the 670 should be easy to find on ebay if you do not mind a used carb.   I can look and see what is on my 670's that I have tomorrow.
Maybe the threads are worn for the needle jets and they are leaking air.  Just thinking out loud.

Missed the one on ebay, thanks though. It was off 625, would have fit but slightly smaller I beleive.
The older jonsered parts are hard to come by but there is some crossover with husky parts i beleive but I'm no expert. The carb pulse, and possibly the choke linkage being different.
I have done some reading on a "672" conversion that may be an option

Sorry you missed it.  The 62511 has same venturi size.  HS document for you.  http://www.tillotson.ie/docs/HSPartsList.pdf

OK I needed to use the saw so I cleaned everything up, put some threadlock on the H and L needles being careful not to get any inside the carb. Started it up set the needles and let it sit overnight for three threadlock to cure. Tried screws in the morning, can move them but they are much tighter. Did some final adjustments then added some epoxy on the screw heads and inside the little cover that goes over the screws, let that set up. Saw now runs better than it has in 10 years.
I do have a cheap China carb for husky 272 on the way to try with some modifications of course.

I've had success with just adding a tiny washer between the screw head and spring to raise the spring tension slightly. If you are putting washers on both screws and they interfere with each other, put one on the top of the spring and the other near the carb body. Hardest part is finding small enough washers.

Suppose if the spring is really bad a locking agent would work, but my worry is that most of those products get tougher/harder with time. You might find you can't adjust it as time goes on.
