Title: 6800 24" bar
Post by: 660magnum on April 22, 2016, 05:00:40 pm
Installed a NOS Sandvik/Windsor Speed Tip 24" bar on my like new Dolmar PS6800 tonight. I started on this last week and found that it was a 81DL instead of a 84DL. So I bought a NOS Stihl 3/8" X .050" X 81DL RS chain for $21.50 and it came today.

The Dolmar 6000i/6800i - 116Si/120Si came with a Oregon K295 (small Husky mount) but you could get factory bar studs to make them D009 (large Husky) or S25 (Medium Stihl) also. So you might see one with any of the three mounts.

Bar had a tight spot and you could see where something hit it at the factory because the mark was painted over. I stuck my scrench in the tight place and a few taps with a 14 oz ball peen until the chain moved freely took care of the tight spot.

I started her up to wear the paint off the rails. In short order I had to tighten the chain. I ran it some more until it was good and oily.

Sure ran good!  ;D

I went to the Dolmar dealer and this saw was setting there as a trade in. There were not any 6400's around at that time. I couldn't get over the size of the teeth on the dog (Single Dog) It sat there another year before I bought it. I already had a 7900 by then. It was such a sweetheart to use. I ordered what was supposed to be a outer dog for it but when it came, it was another inner dog. I got to looking at the dog and comparing it with the inner. Finally I took a ball peen and knocked the rivnuts off the new dog and it bolted onto the cover perfectly. I had ordered bolts when I ordered the spike.

And wouldn't you just know it, I haven't cut a single three with it that had thick bark. Nor with my pair of 7900's either.

The previous owner worked for the Norfolk-Western Railroad and had been cutting up creosote crossties with it. It had the original 20" bar and several well used Stihl RS chains. The chains were black as smut from the creosote. I figure used crossties have considerable grit in them?

Anyway, the saw is pleasant to use. Here is Nick from Cincinnati making a cut with it at a GTG a few years ago.

Very Nice!   In time.. Right now I'm content with the 288xp with  24" bar.  Had it buried and leaning on it hard in a monster section of poplar and it never missed a beat.

I'll have to do that some sunny day. The best light and color is on a sunny day but just in the edge of the shade.

I was messing with firewood yesterday and today

Here's the 1997 6800iH with the 24" bar and 81 DL Stihl 3/8" X .050 RS chain

Keep in mind there is a smaller displacement 6000 Dolmar that is identical and there is a 116Si and 120Si that are also the same saw except the brake mechanism is different.

The four saws in this series have Kolbenschmidt brand cylinders with the transfer on each side coming out the cylinder wall and going back in to bypass the piston like on a Stihl 660. They also have a windowed piston.

This series of Dolmars are just very pleasant to use. They are a higher rpm powerhead and normally have a 7 pin rim. The rim is between the clutch and the crankcase.

There are two other Dolmars; the straight 116 and 120 (No "S") from the '80's that are close to this design but the bore and stroke and the displacements are different. They are pleasant to use saws also but are not as big or powerful as this later series.

One significant difference between the 120Si and the 6800i is that the 6800 came out after Makita bought Dolmar and therefore there is a corresponding Makita 6800.

The "i" means they have a Tillotson injector carb. Instead of a choke, they have a valve that lets the fuel pump put fuel directly into the carburetor air stream. Often in the cold winter, the engine will start and continue to run long enough to get the injector (choke) turned off.

The "H" on mine means that it has heated handles

Another unique thing about this series of saw is that the oil tank is plastic and actually part of the handle assembly. The muffler on this series can be taken all apart if you take it off the cylinder. But, if you let the muffler get loose, there's a big chance of burning a hole in the oil tank. The one I seen damaged this way had the muffler banged up from being thrown around is the reason for the muffler being loose and leaking out the bottom.

This is my LIKE NEW saw for it had little use to begin with but I found a new old stock 6800 cylinder (No piston) and bought a Meteor piston/Caber rings for it. Then it has the new old stock 24" bar and Stihl RS chain.

The Dolmar 6800i, 6000i, 120Si, & 116Si were the predecessors of the later Dolmar 6400, 7300, 7900 series of chainsaws.

There was a companion 3 cube limb saw series of the same era of the earlier saws; the 109, 110, 111i, 115i & 540 saws of which the 111 & 115 were 50cc and mostly came with 15" bars.

It's not mine and I cannot remember the details on it but it does appear to be a 1997 or later one. There are actually two different 115's in those pictures.

The 109, 110, 111,115, 540 etc actually spanned more than 10 years so there are some differences

The one below is mine with the original bar . .  .

Was rip cutting with this saw today, 24" buried in ash quartering up butt logs. What a beast, factory hotrod IMO.

Both heated handles worked too.  :P  Didnt know they were on till I was looking over the saw. I was wearing gloves, so didnt notice running it. Took them off to check it while seeing they were on and tested them out.

Noticed yesterday comparing 6800i with small mount 24" to 365-372 with large mount 24" .  The 6800 was not balanced and nose heavy as bar tipped forward. The 365-372 was perfectly balanced with 24".   Just something I took away from running both. Both get the job done with no problems ripping buried.
