Title: help: flushing oil tank

In my first attempt at chainsaw repair, I've just replaced the oil pump on my Dolmar PS6400 (Makita DCS6401).  The old one was clogged and immobilized by gray-black gunk probably the result of using automobile oil as bar & chain oil. (Ignorance. I figured that if 5W-30 is good for trucks, it must be good for chainsaws.)

I've drained the oil tank, and I'm thinking it would be good to flush any loose crud and the remains of the old oil out of the oil reservoir before I put new oil in and start the saw up again.  (Plus a couple of books talk about flushing the oil reservoir as part of regular maintenance.)

Any one know what solvent to use for this? 

The best thought I've been able to come up with is to use gasoline because it will probably dissolve the old oil (at least), and because whatever gasoline is left in the tank (after I swish it around and pour it out) will evaporate if I leave the tank open for a day. Does that sound right?

Diesel fuel or kerosene may be a better option. Fill half full. Swish. Empty. Repeat.

I have used kerosene and I have had better luck just using old mix to flush with. 

Then after flushing fill the oil tank up with mix and I actually start the saw with NO bar and chain on it and run it through the whole oiler system till I see it flowing like it suppose too.  Never ran into any problems this  way yet.

Anyone see anything wrong with this?  It's been working for me.

I've normally ran K1 or diesel through them with good results .Some of the old Macs were so  gunked up I had to take the pumps apart and replace the o ring in the manual oiler portion . Considering they'd sat for a couple of decades and are over  40 years old to begin with I guess it's not bad though .

I used K1 under the recommendation of the local Dolmar dealer. It was not a Dolmar saw. Anyway, the flush with kerosene and then to run a tank of kerosene through it with the bar off seemed to straighten it out. The pickup had a wire screen.

If it's been in there a long time that damned oil gets about like wax .No matter what type oiler it has ,pressure tank ,diaphragm impulse ,piston impulse or gear drive it can't pump wax . The good news is most times a little douce with solvent of some type fixes it .--old sub sailer ya know, sometimes my choice of examples is rather graphic but effective . ;)

Consensus + easy access means I'm gonna try K1.  I'll report results.
