Title: RD #4 Chain Build Off
Post by: Cut4fun on May 14, 2016, 12:56:07 pm
RD #4 Chain Build Off - Winter 2016-2017

Just so we can start hashing out which chain. What drive link etc.

IMO chain brand is makers choice.

Thinking woods ported 066 as test saw and 12" cant.

20" 404" would be different. Not a lot of use for that bar for most people though. I'm good with 3/8" in whatever drive link is easiest to get through a 12x12.

I would do bigger but my cant stand was built with 8x8 10x10 cold start back in the day.

Your stand is built for bigger cants and other folks building stands now days. If someone else would like to do the testing.

I can do 4 12x12" stacked on mine. I don't think anyone wants to file a 91 or 105 dl chain for racing. It doesn't matter to me. I know I'm home around Christmas usually for a week or longer. I could work it in if there's no snow the whole time and get pine or hardwood cants.

True that.

We can make another poll for length. If people are interested in 28" loops we can do it. Doesn't matter to me.

I'm down for 404, don't care about length, I'll just cut to length

HAHAHA...my smallest is a 84 DL!!!

The biggest I've done is a 141 DL...it didn't end up getting the "full treatment" lol

84 dl would be fine. I can easily strap 4 10x10 on my stand if anyone really wants to. Just let the majority decide. Plan to do it about Thanksgiving to Christmas time frame

i would like to try the 404, but good with whatever.

...don't really know if anyone has it around here......hopefully someone here could make/sell an extra loop if need be?

I have several loops of 21" stihl RS loops. I would sell some if that's the length we choose. I have a large mount bar that can be adapted to run on a 660 mount.

I have been running a 20" .404 bar on a 660 for a couple of weeks now. It pulls it good with an 8t gear. Would do better with a 7t but I like the chain speed. I am in for .404. Think a 20" would be good. Helps to keep the cost down for those guys that don't run any .404.

That is would. I'll get a loop of Oregon to file for this.

Does anyone have any spare used chain they want to part with?  I have never used any .404 nor do I have any.
Don't really want to go buy brand new

Might want to wait till we see what folks decide.  Might want to vote in the poll to see the results so far.

Also welcome to the site and share info where you can. All willing to learn here and share freely when we know the answer.

My stand can hold a pile of cant's or bigger stuff. We can do 28" loops and I can fit 4 12x12 on there at once no problem.

7 to 3 here and 4 to 3 there.  11 to 6 totals so far.

update just went 5 to 3 there so 12 to 6

I think give it a few more days and then pick. Looks like 3/8" is the clear winner. Bar length looks like 20".

Saw an has opened competition saws back up. Wanting to drum up interest in the site. Maybe this chain build could go over there?

6 to 4 there now and 7 to 3 here.  Betting at least 8 of those votes are the same people. As we are here and there.

True. I think they'll be more interest in a 3/8". Lots of people don't have a bar to try 404

Mike since you are willing and able to.  With so few folks into building chains now days to see what they can gain for race and work. Why not do them both?  If you  have the saw cc that can do both.

I will step aside and you can do the longer bar 404 28" 063 and the shorter 3/9 20" 050. Just keep them in separate list IMO.

Choose a gear for each and cc stock or woods ported saw have fun.

I have saws from 562 up to 3120 with all ported or will be ported soon. Even have 11 pin rim to go on the 3120

Deets said 394 for the 404. That sounds like a winner for me.

20" will be race chains so what do we want to use? 365, 372, 7900, 390, 660, and 3120
Title: Re: RD #4 Chain Build Off
Post by: Cut4fun . on June 16, 2016, 10:29:53 pm
394 going to be woods ported?  What gear in 404 with 28" bar and 24" cant?

Thinking 394  would be good with 3/8 9  woods ported or 385/390 066 9 or  3120 9 10

Title: Re: RD #4 Chain Build Off
Post by: mdavlee . on June 17, 2016, 12:51:33 am
Yeah everything there is ported or will be soon. I think 404 8 would be fine for that with 24" of wood unless it is sweet gum. Then it will be a 7 pin. Going to have to call and see what the sawmill guy can get easy. White pine was the softest he had. He told me he didn't do much poplar. I want to try my 66 with a 10 pin for the 20". With a 9 pin I'm still pushing hard on it in 10x10 size pine

72 dl on the 3/8". The 404 I need to find a 28" bar for the dl count. I don't have one and not sure who does.

I like the idea of doing a 93 driver 28" .050 gauge. This is a commonly used bar for me.

83 dl is the 404 drive count. I'll confirm again.  72 dl is the 3/8".

Yep. Going to run in probably 4 10x10 sycamore now that one is broken down in my yard. Should be able to get 4 cants long enough for that.

Since mastermind is having a gtg the first weekend in December and that was a date a couple guys were going to come down and we do this the running will be that Saturday Dec 3 down at Randy's. Deadline will need to be by Thanksgiving to me.

Are you using the 394 for both 3/8 and 404? 83 DL for 404? Does brand of chain matter?  Think I will try and do a 404 chain.

3/8" will be a 5 cube saw. 665/7900or something close to that size. No brand restrictions.
