Title: Serial number ?
Post by: BHB on December 19, 2016, 03:43:16 pm
I'm needing to buy some parts for my Stihl chainsaw. When looking up parts the serial numbers always start with "X". I have a nine digit serial number but no X or any letter preceding the number. For example ad says saws after X25809074 & my number is 2388xxxxx. Would my saw be after the saw number in the ad?

yes it would. the first number in stihls serial numbers only indicate where the saw was built. your saw was built in Virginia beach.

Stihl serial numbers

Serial Numbers

The 1 at the beginning of the serial number indicates the unit was
manufactured in Germany

A 2 would indicate the unit was manufactured in the United States

A 3 represents Brazil

An 8 represents China

SG 20 hand operated sprayers start with a 9

The IPL may start a serial number reference with an “X” meaning to
disregard the first number.

Sometimes when looking up parts for an older unit, such as this 028 chain saw, a serial number will be referenced. If the reference starts with an X this means to disregard the first number of the serial number where it is stamped on the unit.

There may be a small “x” or a star stamped next to the serial number. These symbols indicate that the crankcase passed a vacuum/pressure test or some other inspection during the assembly process of the unit.
