Title: 10 cube 10ci 090 stihl
Post by: Cut4fun on January 11, 2017, 12:25:13 pm
I know I had a thread on these ole stihl 090 10 cube saws somewhere  :-\. Maybe it was in the  racesaws days.

Anyhow here is a big bore 090 a ole racer is getting restored and rebuilt from the racing days.

The pic is the 10ci piston on bottom with a 66mm on top.

OOOF!! That would be a real beast although the cylinder walls must be very thin. What carburetor would work on something like that?

The orignal standard HL Tillotson were usually used with the venturi bored out oversize. Hans Peter Stihl as a young man in the 1960's got heavily involved in the Go Kart scene with the Contra powerheads.
There was many more 10 cube 090 P/C's built then what we were told.
Alot of them got into the ultra light aviation field plus test model saws into the African jungles.

The plating has had a rough life on that one looks like.

Just my WAG many years of not flushing real good.  Getting all the alky/nitro out of it on the flush.

Also surprised how thin the top of piston is over ring. Seen thicker then that break.

That was something else I was wondering about.

Hi Kevin and folkz, been a while since I have been on this forum... Be real nice to find one of those beasts hidden somewhere, there must be a couple out here in Oz.

That piston looks to me like it was set up for a Dykes ring, unlike the 66mm slug. Interesting.

Got my attention Adam. Listening for info.  That looks OEM just like that piston in saw?

I know EJ was wantingto get 70mm made up, least that was last I heard.

Neil good to see you posting here again.

Thank you.

I can remember a thread on these rare 90's some years back, I might have a look see after work and try and find it, may of been back in the Race Saws days too. I have seen a cylinder which had small finger ports which looked original. Same head and simular single ring piston.

Kevin, Oem Mahle for the 10cube. Dyke ring as others noted. Not sure if EJ made the 70 but that was the word on the back street. lol!  this thing is really heavy, Wiseco would be nice and lite I'm sure

There was a lot of talk about these things which are rare as hens teeth .Many will debate weather this rare engine or a 100 thou over bore stroked Mac 101 was the champion of the kart track .

I think Rotax Robert ,Robert Andrews spoke about seeing one at Wayne Suttons chainsaw display .I've never seen either the big Stihl engine or the souped up McCulloch .

Doesn't Madsens have a 10 cube on Nitrous and a pipe?

maybe the 088 was the nos one   http://www.madsens1.com/saw_raceprep.htm

This rare Stihl 090 has a ten cubic inch top end. Stihl made only a handful of these. This one is also fitted it with a snowmobile carburetor and a tuned pipe. The saw belongs to Madsen's. Back in its day, it was a contender.

Those AV handles on that 090 were mine from my first 090. I traded Sam Madsen those for  solid mounts that were originally on that 090.
I got pictures of that 10 cube 090 and a strange looking tube pipe that was on it back in 1984.
I'll  post those pics when I get home tomorrow as we're in the big city at the moment.

To add to my last post. Way back in 1980 when Mt St Helens blew its top and all that abrasive ash.  Madsens solid a record ammount of Stihl chain for years after in the cleanup.
They sold that chain in the miles ;D plus alot of other Stihl products.
So it's easy to see Sam and his dad Ralph had easy pickings to get that 10 cube 090 P/C.

Actually Madsens had two 10 cube 090s as my pictures show.  I took these pics in their old shop in the summer of 1984.
