Hi
New at this forum . I got a couple of old husqvarna 162 that I rebuilt but I need to replace the cylinder ... nowhere to find some . I'm looking at the 61 cylinder . same piston same base gasket . wonder if they would fit my 162 . Other option is going to up to 266 piston & cylinder kit ? . any idea if the 61 will work ?

There are some 630 Jonsered cylinders on Ebay pretty regularly (same as 162). Going up to 266 would be better also easy to find.

There's a 162 cyl/piston on the bay as we speak. A 630 would work as it would have the internal pulse. Using a 61 would not have quite the same power as its a open port. If you could find a good Husky 66, it would be a good power boost and basically a bolt on as well. But good luck finding one. A 272 is also an option but would require more part swapping to make it work. But I guess that's part of the fun. :)

Using a top end for the 61 would be degrading the saw.
Regarding 266 top ends that will work - but 266s made after some time in 1985 came with a larger carb than the 162, 17.5 mm venturi vs. 15.9.
I'm not really sure if a 66 top end will work with the intake and carb of the 162, but I doubt so - and anyway the 162 carb is smaller than the 66 one. Also the top cover may become an issue.
A lot can be adapted to work by modifying parts, my comments about compatibility is about straight bolt ons.

I remember all the big news of the "new XP"Huskies in our logging camp .Not sure if it was 1985 or 86. But here's a April 1986 article on the upgraded XP's. I think they made a typo mistake on the weights.Should be bar chain excluded.

What a difference 6 months does in 1986. This is an article from October 1986. Introduction of the 268XP, 281XP and 298XP.
These new top covers with the snorkel hole air intake design lasted for almost another 10 years on the 272XP.

I wonder if anyone ever found that 15% power increase? It surely didn't show in any specs that I have seen, if they compared to the SE editions on the same models. As far as I know, the XP designations were a pure decal and marketing thing with both the 266 and 181. A small power increase on the 266SE happened around mid 1985 though, but wasn't anywhere near 15% (more like 3%).
Compared to some older models it was of course true.

10 years? As far as I know they still use that cover on the currently made 272xp saws.

Yes the 272XP still manufactured in Brazil haven't changed a bit except a slight power degrade.
I still have my Swedish made "brand new" 1993 272XP with no decomp. Only has made a few cuts in 1 birch and 1 spruce . Less then a tank of fuel burnt in it since leaving the factory so long ago.
Still undecided what to do with it. I'm sure I could get a decent price for it. ;D

Thanks a lot Holmen for posting this article. I've been away for awhile cutting my wood for the upcoming winter. Really like the old Huskys. Just acquired a old orange top 162se which looks to be all original and very low run time. I will post photo's in a new tread in a few days. Would like to know more about when it hit the market. Thanks again.

The 162 started it all for Husqvarna with its good design when introduced in 1976. A few simple changes in its design up until its demise in 1982 when the 266 was introduced. Husqvarna and Jonsered were under one parent company by that time when the 162 turned into a 630 Jonsered. Went on for years after that with an upgrade to a 670 in 1986.
