are the echo short blocks the same I need to replace one  I have a early one will a newer one work or is there a difference ?

They are the same. Weather it's a kiortz or a yamabiko.

While you're at it, you might as well turn it into a 400.  Same saw, only more power.

The bore is larger on the 400, that is the only difference.  You mentioned a new shortblock, so you could drop in a 370 or a 400.
I wonder why Echo makes their saws so close in size of the motors while they are housed in the same basic saw?  ie: CS-310 & CS-352 and the CS-370 & CS-400

You could ask the same question about stihl, husqvarna, poulan etc. Heck, even the car manufacturers do it.

  Also the CS400 has a automatic fast idle when you pull the choke, the CS370 you have pull the throttle and push a button in.  No big deal.  Steve

I put a new short block in it opened up the exhaust  pulled limiters on carb  now it runs good
