Title: MS261-Your opinions please....
Post by: old hoosier on December 15, 2017, 01:59:26 pm
I plan to replace my MS290 with a MS261 for the known improvements. If you own/have owned a 261,please share your experiences (good or otherwise).

Also,FWIW-"Susan" at STIHL USA told me(today) that the basic(non-M-tronic) MS261 is available (and in stock there((wherever 'there " is..)). Interestingly, both of my local Stihl dealers have told me that basic MS261's don't exist/never were......

I've had both the M-tronic and the non-M-tronic over the course of the past 3+ years. I currently am using an M-tronic model and love it. I loved the non-M-tronic one as well. I highly recommend either model.

I got the latest MS261CM with about 12 tanks through it now. I really like it over the latest 550XP I also bought at the same time.
The 261's MTronic has been flawless with very quick throttle response and WOT.
It has a weird strong torque I'm not used too for a small cc high revving saw. It seems to pull the 23RS chain in the wood from idle up like a electric chain saw.
550 falls on its face if not held WOT in the wood.
The 261s master control switch is alot better for starting over the 550's . With the 550 you have 1 more step fiddling with the fast idle.

Firstly, thanks to all who shared their MS261/MS261C experiences. I purchased a new MS261 today;I'm impressed with it. The odd, comical twist is that my dealer had to get authorization from his 'rep' or whomever to get two of these...as if they're scarce. What bull$hit...Truth be known, back at 'Stihl-HQ',they're likely between a $hit and a sweat hoping to get rid of however many there are.....I know how marketing really works, too  LOL.
Now,in order to qualify for a 3rd MS261,one must obtain written permission from both Clintons.......Damn,I'm not sure what I should do-use the saw, bronze it or Ebay it........lol.
