Title: Dolmar open port/closed port?
Post by: Giles on April 17, 2018, 11:44:30 am
Just rebuilt a Dolmar 111 and this particular one had one piston ring and appeared to be closed port.
It seems like Dolmar made both closed and open port in this model, but this is my first closed port 111.
My go to saw is a  115 that is closed port but cylinder ports are  a little different
Not sure if someone changed something.

I have a 111 but have never checked the ports on it to see if it is open or closed.

Also would be interesting to note how the closed port runs compared to a open port.    If any kind of power difference that is noticeable.

I have rebuilt/owned several of these saws.
With my experience, the closed port has a more crisp sound with better throttle response and a little more power.
I especially like a closed port cylinder because piston has more "wall support"
As I said, My favorite saw is my Pristine Dolmar 115. Starts with one pull if I am fast enough to release choke and is one of the smoothest running chainsaws.
Dolmar got it right with the 115

As far as favorite Dolmars go I would have to say my 120 super.    Starts easy and pulls like a freight train.
I believe right now I have a 2 111's one 112 a 119 and the 120.

I have a 6800iH which is just a newer version of the 120Si and I also have a 1997 111 that I put a 115 cylinder/Meteor piston in. They are favorites. They are fine running/looking saws. The 6800 was a 6000 which is like a 116Si and I put a new 6800 cylinder/Meteor piston in it. Kevin was over at the house and used the 6800 until the chain got dull and I got out a Husqvarna 372 for him to finish up with.
