Title: Dolmar 7900 basket case.
Post by: man of stihl on January 28, 2012, 05:27:08 pm
I finally got my ebay 7900 basket case. This is my first modern Dolmar. To me, It reminds me of a husky 372 series. Quad transfers, carb. The first thing i'm working on is the coil wire needs replaced. Apparently i have to pull the flywheel. ??? The wire is channeled behind the flywheel and seems to be attached somewhere. Does this sound right?

yes the wire runs under the flywheel and it sits in the crankcase on its way to the sparkplug

None of those IPL's are the latest one

Here is the 2009-10 one with the HD filter and the AV limiter from the Dolmar site

Thanks guys. Im sure i'll have more questions as i go.  :D I'm going to need a cylinder cover for this saw. who had it before poked a hole in the muffler and it melted a hole in the cover.  :-X I need a filter also so i think i'll buy the HD kit.

Mike next time we are at a gtg etc. Can you have your 6400 with you and maybe a closed port 365. I'm all out of 365 stuff right now with all these people doing 4 cube racesaw builds.  ;)

I would be interested in the feel of a 6400 too. I had one but converted it to a 7900 before ever running it.

My 6400 is a regular attendee at every GTG I attend, so yes it will be there.
I won't have a 365 of any kind unless it comes to me so cheap that I would be stupid not to buy it.

I get my Dolmar parts from Pats Small engines  http://www.psep2.biz/pages/OemParts#/Dolmar/PS-7900_Chain_Saws_-_Gasoline/Hood%2c_air_filter%2c_muffler/2S01080025/2S01080002G  There may be cheaper places to buy Dolmar parts but I haven't found it yet.  Black cyl cover $17.44.  Price a Husky cyl. cover.

Almost done. I'm still missing some brake parts. I think i will need to clean the carb. It idles and runs at WOT. But in between it bogs. L adjustments wont work. I had to buy a Total 24'' bar. Love them things. :)(http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g457/rjcfritz/DOLMAR7900002.jpg) (http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g457/rjcfritz/DOLMAR7900001.jpg)

You need to add the upper right hand AV spring limiter cap yet  038 310 070

They are $10 at Bailey's and around $6.50 at the dealer

Also the rubber tail is missing from the chip guide inside your clutch cover.  Without it, the right front corner of your tank will get eaten away.

038 213 190    @ $7.50  at the dealer

The older 6400,7300, & 7900 tended to leak oil pretty bad when setting around.

The problem is rooted around the old tubes from the oil tank to the pump and from the pump to the bar.

They don't cost much but takes a little effort to install them.

The saw is still functional even if they leak.

One style is green and the other is black?

From pump to bar 038 245 061

From tank to pump suction line  038 245 020

What did you end up using for topend? OEM

Have you got to test run it yet?

OEM top end. Yes i cut with it. I think it needs the carb cleaned. It bogs between idle and WOT. The amish guy gave me a doner saw to get break parts off of. Its got a coil and carb i might take off of it to.

I'm having a difficult time getting that break spring compressed! >:(

My experience, you have to strap the saw down and use both hands on the spring.

You have to use a tool that sticks up inside the coils about and inch so the spring doesn't bend yet doesn't hinder you getting the edge of the coil in the trough.

Thanks. What a PITA!!!!

Glad it's you and not me learning that.

I have froze my fingers off 3 times working on that stihl trimmer today.

I figured out the carb issue. The impulse line was too long and was kinked. I snipped 1\2 inch off and it runs good.

I swapped the Zama carb out with a Walbro today. I can tell it has better trigger response all ready. Any one else do this??

That was one of the first swaps guys were doing when 7900's came out. Walbro off the 372's.

Check some of those hotter woods ports running around and the carbs on them.  ;)
