hello all........ i'm new to this site been working on my stihl 024 AV wood boss for a few weeks now off and on would not start before piston had a slight score on it and the rings were stuck compression was 80 psi so i got a new piston and cylinder installed them checked crankcase pressure it is good ...... flywheel key is good .......new carb kit walbro wt22 ....put it back together still dont start getting gas does not even fire with gas in the cylinder..... getting spark.... the manual says Accurate testing of the ignition module is only possible with special test equipment. For this reason it is only necessary to carryout a spark test in the workshop.A new ignition module must be installed if no ignition spark is obtained(after checking that wiring and stop switch are in good condition).......anyone know how to check the Ignition Module besides getting spark before i order a new one..also compression now is 125 psi what is it suposto be........thanks........ 125 psi should be enough to get it to fire.
Compression is usually up around 150 and yours may get there if you can run it some and get the ring seated.
There's the possibility that the plug is firing outside the engine but under compression is not firing if the spark is weak?

The old timers would go by the color
A blue spark was best
There are devices sold to attach to the spark plug wire that will indicate a spark with the plug in the engine.
I think Stihl sells them but you might find a cheaper one at the auto parts?

Make sure the air gap of the coil is set correctly .Air gap meaning the distance the coil piece is set from the flywheel magnets which is usually about 12 thouandths of an inch or about 4 layers of printer paper .

I use a business card slipped between coil / fly to set gap between flywheel and coil.
I use this to check spark. HF $4

I've got a fancy one made by Snap-on that looks like an ink pen .It's just an induction glow light you just hold up to the plug wire .

spark is red white at plug must be weak.......air gap should be .008 to .012 according to manual...... i have it set to .010
also found a nick in the plug wire think it was grounding out there put electrical tape on it for now got it started but ordered a new ignition module thanks for all the replies.....Chris.....

IF your coil is still good. On some coils you can replace just the wire.
The tape would have worked. I had a wire cut into and spliced it and taped up.

wire dont looks like it comes out.....coil has a whiteish red spark at the plug not blue does that mean it is weak? .......Chris......

Most chainsaw spark plug wires are only 5mm dia. Measure your old wire or take it with you to the store to get the proper diameter and length.

If you need to tape up a plug wire use something like Scotch 130C tape .This is made for high voltage and will self vulcanize .It's pricey at 8-9 bucks a roll but good stuff .
