Title: 084 pre-production test saw #14
Post by: trappermike on January 28, 2019, 08:58:00 pm
Not long after the first 084 Stiihls hit the market I was trying to make Stihil saws compete against the McCullochs and other big saws in Loggers Sports, one day the Stiihl Rep. said "I'm sending you something special",soon arrived a slightly used 084,but it had no serial # on it,just #14 stamped on each half of the crankcase.
Well I turned it into a hotsaw and it ran well, but it still survives today, had the hell run out of it all these years and still runs strong. What a testament to a good saw.
But #14? Where did the other ones go?

Sounds like a rogue prototype that didn't make it back to Germany.  084 and 064 introduced in 1986.
That Stihl rep wasn't Dave Gordon was it?

No Pat Brown was Stihl area rep.then. The 064 didn't come out until a few years later,we did receive 2  pre-production  test saws, but they had serial numbers.

I think your Stihl rep was trying to sell off the 056Mag ll.
Here in Manitoba I bought 2 brand new 064's in the spring of 1986, one with heated handles. The 084 was available for order that summer .
That might explain why Walker got so excited in a negative way when I brought my 064 to Sayward in 1988.

056 Mag ll and 038 Mag introduced to market in 1985.
084 and 064 introduced 1986.
Here's some pics.

You may be right,we did not get 064's until after the 084's,how long I don't remember, almost 1 year later maybe in Northwest Canada.

The earlierest 064 at 14.1 lb.was the weight of what a 046 or MS460 is today. I think Stihl held them back from the PNW until they beefed them up. By the end of 1986 they were specced at 14.9 lbs and still climbing in 1987/88.
The 14.1 model was perfect for me logging on piecework running a 18"/20" b/c. with a 8 pin rim and I wasn't even running the dogs.

I think you're right,Stihl held back the 064's to us until we sold off a huge amount of old 056's.
Original 064's were horrible, the stock air filter let by horrific amounts of sawdust straight into the motors, worst I've ever seen, but soon they had the HD filter and they were ok.

The original 064 is the only saw I've ever seen where the impulse hose (from the crankcase) was  plugged with sawdust so the motor wouldn't run. They sucked in tons of sawdust.

Yep on the west coast where you are in B.C. loggers running big long bars and 7 hours a day working in dusty thick bark red cedar and fir calls for a HD air filter.

Completely opposite here in our clean thin barked white spruce with 18"-20" bars the 064 light duty air filters were my favorite.
In fact I converted both my 066's to 064 non air compensating carbs and filter setups.
One of the reasons how I got my '92 066Mag down to the weight of a MS461.
These are my favorite pics of my 1992 and 1997 066's.
'92 is wearing a 20" ES Light , 8 pin rim with no dogs, 064 flywheel and rewind  and '97 a early non air compensate 064 HD filter setup , 28"ES with dual dogs.
