Title: Another 261
Post by: Old Iron Logging on February 05, 2012, 09:39:13 pm
Got another new 261. This one is not heated. Going to break it in thinning in the 24" spruce I have been working in. Got it for $235 less than a 346. The Efcos cut nice but shoulders can't take the weight all day.

Arms and shoulders sure feel better carrying the 261 all day. Got some pics on my phone. Will post them when I figure out how to get them on the computer.

How does the 261 compare to the good old 026?

It is a big step forward in every area. Yes it is heavier but it does not feel it when working.
I found the 260 carried its weight towards the front. The 261 has better balance. I get approx 15 minutes more runtime on a tank with the 261. Air filtration is probably the best out there. The saw needs a 3/8 setup. The .325 it comes with holds it back in performance.

For my work and trees it is the best 50cc saw I have used. I have never logged with a 346 NE.

I have played with some NE 346s at the shop. Probably close in power.

what bar do you have?

I only run 16" bars. Thats bar enough for trees up to 36". Yesterday I tried .325 with 7 and 8 tooth rims and 3/8 with 7 tooth. I settled on what I have used for the past 20 years on all of my pulp saws. .325 chain with 8 tooth gear.

I would run 3/8 on it in the firewood pile.

Still waiting for Stihl to put a K095 bar on this size of saw.

Art is that bar on that 261  a 16"   the way the pic is makes it even look shorter.

Yes it is a true 16 " bar. 67 drive links. Funny thing with Stihl at least up here every bar is called 16" whether it is 62dl or 67dl.

The 261 sure comes lean from the factory up here. After breakin this one tached 15,400 as rich as the stop would allow. Set at 13,900 now.
