Title: Stihl MS311 Ignition.
Post by: Kierant on July 01, 2022, 09:18:47 pm
Hi Guys, greetings from the South Coast of the South Island, NZ.
My Stihl MS311, refused to start, no spark, fitted a new sparkplug, still no spark, checked all wiring, OK. Suspected ignition module, Stihl dealer tried to charge an exorbitant price! So sourced one from China. Fitted new module, chainsaw started immediately!!. Didn't use it for a couple of weeks, then when trying to start it, it was kicking back, yanking the starter cord out of my hand. It eventually started & I did quite a bit of work with it.
Next time I came to use, it just kicked back all the time, couldn't get it to start at all. Suspected the new ignition module was faulty, managed to get a full refund! Ordered another module from a different source, fitted it this morning, still the same! Wrenching the starter cord backwards. Fitted the original module back, just to prove my original diagnosis, & still dead as a dodo, no sign of sparking.
Any help or thoughts would be much appreciated.
Cheers, Kieran.

Thats part of the issues with aftermarket coils at times. Try to find  a good used.

Have you checked the flywheel locking keyway? Kicking back when pulled could indicate the timing is out, and that could also affect the module. Suggest you pull the flywheel off and check alloy keyway is intact and is actually stopping the flywheel slipping away from its fixed axis
