Post by: DB_43725 on March 01, 2012, 02:11:09 pm
Ok checked it out and it has no spark, was wondering is their any way to check the coil to tell if its good or bad ?  I thats not the problem maybe I can get lucky and its the switch. Any ideas would be helpfull.  TKS DB

You could disconnect the switch at the coil and take it out of the circuit.

The switch works by shorting out the coil to keep the coil from working. If you disconnect the switch wire at the coil, you eliminate any problem with the switch.

This may be silly question but did you try another spark plug?

I looked in the repair manual and it talks about if you change the plug with one with the correct gap, inspect the high voltage wires, disconnect the stop switch, and set the coil gap at .3mm and no spark - to change the coil.

TKS 066,,,, I took the plug out ,disconnected the ground wire check gap and spun the flywheel by hand and couldnt get any spark period. I tryed to get sparkgrounding with a wire run outa the sparkplug wire about a quarter inch from the block and nothing. By the way how could I  come up with a service manual or a copy of one for the 5100 ? Any info would help very much.

you are not going to get spark by spinning it by hand you will have to spin it with the recoil it has to spin fast    BILL

Most of the time you can clean the alum. transfer off of the cyl. with a Qtip and muratic acid.  Heat the cyl. (works better when hot) apply acid on transfer repeat til gone.  You can use scotchbrite pad or 400 grit wet-n-dry sandpaper.  Google the PN for the piston to find best price.  The new piston doesn't have windows it has been replaced with a lighter non windowed piston.  The last one I got was from the link below.  Hope this helps with your project.

Well I had already got the p@c before i recieved the saw,,, So im just gona change the hole anchalota,,, but what concerns me is in the lower end down in the crankcase,,, now I checked and the main bearing have no play side to side and no up and down ,, but the crank has rubed the paint off of the case didnt seem to get any metal, but the throws on the crank did take the paint off on the starter side, well the paint musta went up the transferrs because its not their anywhere, could this be what cause the piston to seize. It is streeked about a half in wide from top to bottom, sticking the ring in the grove.

The bearing and seal are probably bad on that side?

Well im not so sure,,reason being on that half ,,inside of the counter weight the paint apears to be bubbling up,, so if I had to guess thats what made the counter weight rub it off of the crank case.

Since coming across a spun bearing for myself I would always check it first. Simply remove clutch and turn flywheel by hand. It will evident if it is free in the case. End play is normal but radial play is not.

Sorry havent been on here for a wile,,, But I got 4 ,,5100s now been practicing taking them apart and reasembling them,,LOL,,, Fig. was a good time to learn how to port a saw. I did learn real quick big is not always better. But Im getting better at it as each one gets faster,,cut speed,,, Maybe I will get one to suit me one of these days. But to answer your question,no I dont have any cylinders that are any good now, except the ones im using.

Just finished up a WP 5100 last week.  Haven't started it yet.  My other 3 are new.  Next is a 510 with a 5100 cyl.  Always looking for 5100 cyl's.  I did drill and tap the WP cyl. for a decomp. came out nice.  Just happened my drill press is dead level.  Cut a plate out of 1/4" plexiglass to mount cyl on.  Then used a laser level to check for vertical.  Drilled a 3/32" into cyl.  Had to go slow the plexiglass wanted to flex some.  Then 4 larger bit sizes to 11/32" 15mm deep.  Another note I did square up the casting for decomp with a file.
