My 25 yr old 272 has been ultra-reliable reliable, right down to the original spark plug. Wait, that's a lie: The kill switch broke when it got crushed one time. Anyway, after all these years I did a tear-down inspection. Everything looks fine, just normal wear. I failed to do a comp test so I have no hard numbers on that. That was silly, I know. But, my gut feeling is compression good.
While I've got it apart I feel like I should do something' - like re-ring it. So, here's my questions:
Is it ok to install a new piston ring, or, should the ring and cylinder be a matched set? IOW, could a new ring possibly damage a used cylinder?
Are factory OEM rings available? If so, from who?
Thanks people!

Absolutely while you have it torn down put a new ring in it for preventive maintenance. New ring wont hurt old cylinder. You can get them from Husky dealer or can use a Caber aftermarket ring. OEM is always better than aftermarket. However Caber's are very good. PN: 503-2890-19. I get online OEM Husky from: http://www.jackssmallengines.com/help.cfm#/Husqvarna_Power_Equipment/272_XP_(1997-01)/Piston%2f%2fCylinder/08%7c%7e127%7c%7e341/081270004
Caber rings from: http://northwoodsaw.com/store/index.php.
While torn down I would replace cranks seals too.
Hope this helps.

Farmboy, exactly what I wanted to know. Complete with url link! You make it easy for me :-) Thanks bud.
Interesting you mention the seals: Another guy, Al, in a recent post also mentioned the seals. So, OEM ring and seals it is.
