Title: Makita 6401 7901
Post by: Cut4fun on March 03, 2011, 02:09:52 pm
This board looked bare.   :)

This was a woods ported 6401 with  7901 top end that Big Dave had put some finger ports in.  I owned it for awhile as my first woods ported saw and then sold to a firewood cutter  out west. I regret selling this one.  :'(

Looked like a pretty nice little saw! A 6401BB is next on my list!

My next door neighbor has one of those .He loaned the thing out and his bud screwed up one of the bar studs .

I turned him on to Scott in Vermount for parts ,reasonable  quick . He had a little problem getting it back together but aside from that did pretty darned well for never working on a saw  before .

The thing does pretty good but being my usual wise azzed self I had to show him how a souped up Stihl runs .  Kinda unfair comparrison ,a stocker against a screamer .All in good fun . ;D

Just finished upgrade on one 6401 x 20"(used) to BBK & HD air filter kit.  I wanted to see how this one turned out before I do the new one .  All I did was cleaned up transfers, intake and exhaust .  Feels pretty stout have not had in wood yet.  Husky coil mod and another ex.outlet is next even though I opened stock outlet to size of deflector.

No, I haven't.  Thanks for the info.  I'm pretty new to performance and what will work in what.  I'm badly addicted though.  Thanks to people that are willing to share their knowledge am learning.  I've been a wrench turner/hot rodder since I was 13-14 yrs. old.

Last night on Ebay a newly converted (10-15 tanks) 6401 NWP Bailey's BBK w/HD airfilter and original P&C 160psi. sold for $345 listing #220784535449.  I don't get it this is the second one I have seen go for the same money as straight 6401????????????

Here is my WAG to why.  Lot of HD 6401 being bought for $200-$250. Then a $99 AFM BB 81cc put on. Some have been known to be free to dealer cost of $50. Thats why IMO.

I would pay more for one with OEM 79cc top end. JMO

Whats a HD filter kit? $69 or so? It's been used so the price is cut in half now. Just my thoughts.

A look inside my first woods ported 6401 saw with 7901 top end.  I bought new covers with the pre-filter built into the carb cover. That cut down on the chips getting through to the filter.

Mine was stock with windows. Way before guys started using different pistons and shims under cylinders.

I hear there is the 52mm Wiseco's out there now too.  Look like the 62mm 3120 piston in 52mm.

Thread with throwing pistons out there.  http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/dolmar/dolmar-7900-piston-choices/
