That's a new one on me . I'm finding out some of the later Mac stuff was sold other places than North America . The Brits for example talk about models I've never heard of .

The time line fits .I speculate perhaps it filled the gap probabley in Oz after the big reed valves went away .

If I'm not mistaken the 82 cc piston port like 805-850 ,8200 was probabley the last larger profssional saw made in North America of a true McCulloch origin when they went out of business in 98-99 or there abouts .

I knew Pardner had their hands in a few but this is the first I've heard that Dolmar was a player also .

Hi, I bought 2 of these chainsaws from Dick Petrikas Chainsaws P/L in (1989/90.) 385 Tennyson Rd Tennyson NSW 2754 02 45765555 and later bought parts for them.
He purchased a bulk load of them when he won the chainsaw dealer of the year & his son often raced these saws in comps. 30inch and 60 inch blades were supplied as an option. I have had over 300 hrs use on mine and still going strong. (sold one 60 inch  bar unit for $1750) :D  I have a copy of the maint manuals available.

AHHH one of the bubblebees as they where known down under. Hot rod dolmars man awesome saws. the posted sae hp numbers for those where the highest ive ever seen for stock saws, however 12.1hp for that saw doesnt sound realistic in stock form. The most powerful saws ever built where mccullochs even though they refused to publish numbers.

I beg to differ.
Stock for Stock the Sachs Dolmar 166 is about the most powerfull
saw ever produced in stock form. I've run them against Mac's
most powerfull saws. The 797's and 125's. Mac's are great
performers with lots or torque and can easily pull bars that
excede 60 inchers. But the 166 will still out cut them. I've run
the 166's in good sized wood against 797's, 125's, Homelite 2100's
Stihl 084's, 880's, Husky 3120's, Skil 1690's, Jonsereds 111S, ect.
And the 166 always seems to come out on top.

The 166 hasn't worked out so well around here. People that buy them don't keep them very long. Apparently there's not enough really big wood?

It's funny you say that Lee as their only 118cc but have a long stroke giving a bit more torque out here in Australia they were sold in only small numbers and i think Dolmar sold even less than McCulloch did

Without getting into an argument,my time working with the bigger Stihls and  then Huskies were just right for our native production hard wood logging. 166 dollies were certainly in our industry but in small numbers, then they changed colours and the bumble bee came alone, same saw diferent colour but still not many were used compared to the main 2 brands.
I cut logs with both the 166 dolly and bumble bee's as, we log fallers swapped work mates saws often. They both performed exactly the same (same bloody saw) and they both gave me white knuckle and for some reason the owners run semi chisel 404 chain where as we were running 3/8 CJX skip square filled makeing the job much easier.
Those dollies  could be leaned on tho, they would pull way down and still be cutting. Sawmill owners with their own smaller logging crews bought them mainly because they were cheaper than the other brands, some professional cutters bought them for the same reason.
They (dolmar and Mac) proberbly would of sold a lot more if the dealers who sold them had better back up and parts network from the manufacturers. This both Stihl and Husky had sorted real good and were much better to deal with.

Not arguing. Just stating from my use.

Owning 166 3120 084. Not running over a 32" bar buried 084 3120. As that is all I had for bar and only 30" on 166.  The 166 would have been my last choice.   084 3120 166 in that order for me.

I always described the 166 handles like a half filled water balloon in my hands.

Yeah i meant all macs including those by dolmar the 166 was rebadged and sold as a promac so yeah. yeah if mac had a dealer support network like stihl or husky i believe they would still be original macs. Dyno numbers achieved with mac engines showed their potential and of the saws ive run stock for stock the sp125 seems fastest through big wood, it is close in some tests but the macsp125 i run has beat the dolmar 166 my brother owns, he has bested me a few times but usually the mac wins.

Like all saws from the far side of the equator parts run in arrears especially if mods or updates are needed on the saws so a lag was always a pain even Stihl and Husky have suffered the same problems and still do in getting improved mods into saws .............. Australia had it's own needs in better air filtration

Now i cannot be certain if at that stage in the early eighties Victa Australia were still the main importer of Dolmars into Australia for if they were then Victa wasn't too worried about a few chainsaws let alone finding and keeping bits for them for their dealers they would be happier selling a mower and running their dealers to the wall.

Production of the Big Mac's i mean the SP125 MAC decided in 1977 that they wouldn't retool for that series of engine as the future of pro saws didn't warrant the massive costs involved hence the appearance of the PM1000

I agree with you Kevin, the 166 would be my last choice too.  The 084 / 088 were a nice saws for falling in steep country, but i like the 3120's better, all top saws for our needs. The 088 , now 880 is very popular in crews which have not gone to harvesters.

I do strongly agree that Sachs Dolmar had very poor
dealer support from the factory. I sold Sachs Dolmar
back in the day, Late 70's early 80's and there line of
saws to me was second to none. We sold a ton of the
112's, 114's, 117's and 119's but nothing larger. There
ease of repair was simple. I have never profesionally
cut with the bigger saws so my experience with how
they handle or feel is limited. I have run them on many
test logs just for fun and even had timed cuts against
other big saws and the 166 is always a bit stronger.
The Mac 797 is also a great performer with a tad more
grunt than is later SP125. The 166, 084, 880, 3120 to me
are close but with the saws i own a good running 166
just seems to pull strong in the big wood. Of coarse not
every saw model runs the same. I have some 166's that
seem to run a tad better than others.

Just my two cents.

The dolmar 166 was a great powerful saw for a stock saw, but it was not and is not as powerful or as fast cutting as a mcculloch 101b. The sp125 and dolmar 166 are hotrods in their own right but neither has the pure zing of the 101b. In fact as far as stock saws go, the special racing edition 101b mcculloch may very well be the fastest stock cutter ever.

Any of those mentioned big displacement saws is going to be powerful. The 166 to me was unbalanced .

In the day Dolmar was never a front runner probably due to lack of dealer support .McCulloch, Homelite, later Stihl .

Husqvarna tried a power play and shot themselves in the foot .Insisted the Stihl dealers only sell their product or Stihl .Pulled their franchise and refused to buy back the inventory .Closest Husky dealership from this local is 40 miles away .Good saws bad politics.
