Title: stihl 051AV help
Post by: rowley on April 21, 2012, 07:30:20 pm
howdy folks ,

I'm at my whitts end to solve a problem with the bar oiler on the 051 . This has been a great saw  and has had little use over itslife time ,It is only used for firewood getting ( cutting dry australian hard wood,  ) at present it has a 600mm bar on ( pprox 25 inch) with a carbide tipped chain, which takes full effect of the saws power .

what is happening is the chain is not getting enough or very little oil , I have not pulled the oil tank off to check the diaphram as it was replaced approx 2yrs ago . I have cleaned out the tank and reverse flushed the system with air and petrol on 3 occasions  , the last time the oiler stopped working compleatly  so the saw is out of action .
Can the oil ducts be enlarged to allow more oil flow ? as the dry hard wood realy sucks the oil up even when it was working correctly

As a consequence of no oil the chain has been derailing off the sproket and chewwing the two guide plates that hold the bar, dose any one hnow of the place and availability of spares for the saw

thanks
rowley

When working correctly, those saws will dump a huge amount of bar oil on the chain. I had a 050 that would oil a 36'' bar just fine. First i would take your clutch off and make sure that your clutch drum is turning your oil pump. Plus, you having issues with the chain coming off, i would look there first. Your STIHL dealer still carries alot of parts for those saws or ebay is another good parts source.

thanks ron , the chain is comming off from exesive heat , makes  the chain loose , after it (chain) cools down it shrinks back to a good tightness.
my father brought this saw  new and its never been an " oil pumper"  even after a service putting the tip near some wood and giving it a rev , the oil flicking off the chain is limmited .
One thing that doese come to mind is that oil spits out the top of the oil filler cap enough to cover your glove and be a pain . Is there any way of obtaining a workshop manuel .

P.S Most of the stihl places here tell me to throw it out . or use it as a boat anchore

tanks for the reply

I sent you a IPL by email. I dont have a workshop manual for that saw. Sounds like that saw had oiler issues from the begining. I owned two 050's and two 075's with no oiler issues. Restoring all four saws with help from my Stihl dealer and ebay. Maybe parts availibilty is different in Au? Here is a pump and drive gear. The guy ships worldwide. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-OIL-PUMP-DRIVE-GEAR-STIHL-050-051-075-076-CHAINSAW-NEW-1111-647-0601-/110802860887?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19cc5d7b57
