all I find have bar nut studs attached to bottom of clamshell.

Maybe.   Does the homelite have the pull rope on the back of the engine or the front.   That engine has the flywheel on one side and the clutch on the other side.  Not all weed eaters are made that way.

was just looking at engines on ebay.  there is broken piece of red plastic under one screw
